Reasonableman
How long till we can drive our own cars in there ?? They need to build the roads first Much of the country can be accessed by 4wd, and convoys make sense in some areas where security and road conditions dictate. Generally, transport infrastructure, roads, etc, are in pretty poor shape. I wouldn't be packing the Honda City for a Myanmar roadtrip just yet. jerrysteve
Now that the "walls" have come down in Myanmar, there will be competition for the tourist money between the 2 countries, perhaps that will finally force Thailand to finally get their "act" together. Get in quick.. maybe a beach resort hehe Wouldn't it be good if countries had reciprocal arrangements over land ownership as they do with say visa requirements. So if a Burmese can buy land in the UK then a UK citizen can buy land in Myanmar and so on. That might even change a few attitudes in Thailand.... Reasonableman
How long till we can drive our own cars in there ?? They need to build the roads first Have 4 wheel dive...can travel Suggest even with 4wd that you avoid the rainy season, which can range from June-july to September-October, when many unsealed roads become impassable. Such trips should theoretically become possible once land borders are opened to vehicular tourist traffic. Still a lot of issues to sort out, logistically, administratively, and politically. And there are still security issues along the mutual border.
Johpa
Is see western powers pushing very strongly for Myanamar to have a free market. Which means big investment opportunities for foreigners. Get in quick.. maybe a beach resort hehe The west simply wants to exploit and extraxct natural resources. The Chinese are seeking both to extract and also to gain some strategic advantages. The 40% of the population, the non-Burmese are being sold out down the river. Even "The Lady" is talking nice about one of the worst of the western exploitation companes, Total S. A. My guess is that they temporarily open up and then the generals close the country back up again. High risk investment here but yes, really excellent touring potential long term if built from the ground up. But the real potential is up in the upland minority areas and that is not going to happen any time soon.
