Mandolins & Mandolin Players In Chiang Mai?

Featured Replies

I know, I know - this is a slightly esoteric request for information, but I enjoy playing mandolin, and am wondering if there is any kind of mini mandolin playing community in Chiang Mai. Mandolins are popular in bluegrass, blues and Irish traditional/folk music genres, so I am wondering if there might be a smattering of mandolinists in town.

A friend told me there is a Thai bluegrass band plays a bar in town called Tiger Kingdom. Has anyone heard this band, and do they have a mandolin player?

Thanks,

pj

There's a Scots git I know that plays one PJ, don't think he has a band though. PM me and I'll give you his phone no.

Don't recall if the band at Tiger Kingdom bar has a mandolin player or not but the band is excellent; worth checking out.

A kind offer, CMT, but as a general rule I stay away from men in skirts. Them and lanky Aussies.

Thanks - I'll check them out. Is the bar easy to find?

Is a mandolin easy to learn? I'm looking to find an instrument to learn to play. It has a nice ring to its name!

PJ.

Sorry I do not play the Mandolin - only the Tenor ukelele, although a close cousin, it is not quite the same.

After years of mangling and butchering varous musical instruments - a few years ago I found contentment with the ukelele. I started off with a 'Soprano' which is the smallest size - but quickly came to realize that, as a big guy, my hands and fingers would not accommodate the fingering of the chords. So I bought a 'Tenor' - third size of the four categories. There is so much self=teach and a wealth of music for ukelele on internet that I was able to 'cherry-pick' the songs which I found, for me easy to play, and my family and friends would enjoy.

The instrument only has 4 nylon strings and you can strum or 'finger-pick' the melody. I started of with popular and moved on to include classical. You can buy cheap and cheerful at such places as Big C or there are speciality musical stores such as the one on the left - I think in the AIA building on the run up to Suyandork Gate on the left hand side of the road. I also purchased at a very reasonable price - an electronic tuner which is clipped to the top of the ukelele and makes it a doddle to tune.

It is highly portable and I am sure that you would be the life and soul of any party.

PJ - sorry to hi-jack your posting.

No problem. It was almost inevitable that a uke player would join in the thread! smile.png

The mandolin is easy to have fun with - four pairs of strings, tuned exactly like a violin, means that learning to pick simple traditional fiddle tunes is relatively easy; likewise, two-finger chords are easy to pick up on.

I like the uke, but prefer the mandolin, and am still hopeful of finding some other players here in Chiang Mai.
