Phuket It Is

This thread is a joke right? You got to be off you're nut to even consider moving to Phuket.

In that case, there are many hundreds if not thousands of expats who live happily full time here in Phuket. Those who don't like it here generally can't adapt to change, and are likely to find the same form of change and hence complain wherever they end up.

Very few resident expats use tuk tuks, girlie bars, jet skis or any other facility commonly used by tourists. Most are only concerned about the availability of certain products, an occasional moan about the increase in traffic, or seeking some other form of information.

Perfect, no; very good, most definitely.

That's me to a tee!! The last part that is!!

As mentioned in a previous post, you may discover that many more people are leaving Phuket than are moving to Phuket. You should ask yourself, "Why?"

Gererally speaking, I agree with you post, however, I've always wondered how many of those "thousands of expats" have traveled to other parts of Thailand and other similar places to Phuket, in the South East Asia region????

I would not be surprised if many expats have nothing to compare Phuket to, therefore, wouldn't know if the "grass is actually greener for THEM on the other side."

Well surprise, surprise. I've been all over Thailand and several other SE Asian countries. I decided I liked it here. Although that was quite a few years ago now...

The weather has been great, so I have been out and about. When it's raining, and I'm stuck inside, I'll be online a fair bit. What's your excuse? :) :)

If people are happy here it does not matter if they have travelled elsewhere!! I have been to other parts of Thailand but still want to be here, I have not been to other Asian countries and don't want to!! I am in and out all day here I can not keep still, other people might not be the same but still be very happy, I have met Peter and he certainly seems happy to me and in what he is doing so all is good!!

That's great Jimi, but have you ever met an expat who has never been anywhere else but here? I have, quite a few actually. They came here for a holiday and loved the place. (I have no problem with that) Then they came back here twice a year for a holiday. Then they retired here.

They constantly sing the praises of Phuket and bag out anyone who has a critical word to say about Phuket.

"Perfect, no, very good, most definately" is a pretty good description. There's nothing wrong with discussing the imperfections of the place.

When "jackh" posted, "You've got to be off your nut to even consider moving to Phuket." Rather than jumping on him, would it hurt to ask why he has that opinion?

The "very good" that exists here, also exists in other places, and many of those other places do not have the "issues" Phuket has.

I wasn't asking "how happy are expats here?" I was asking how many of the expats here have something to compare Phuket with????

I'll probably get a response like, "it's doesn't matter because I'm happy." :) :)

My point is, without anything to compare Phuket with, how do you know that Phuket is as good as you say it is, and is it possible that you could be even happier somewhere else, if you experienced what was on offer out there?

Some of us are happy here and don't need to compare it with anything else!! I compare this to the UK that is enough for me!! Yes it is possible there is a better place some where, I am not interested in finding out because I am happy here like many others.

I've read his posts and I know he has an agenda, which is to slag anything about Phuket. As I said in my previous post about him, he's a travel agent in China...

And I agree with part of your second statement. Everywhere has issues, although not the same issues as Phuket...

Of course, each to their own, but it's interesting to me how many will research and inspect many properties here before they buy here, if they decide to buy, but not see anywhere else to live in Thailand, or the region, other than Phuket. :) :) :) :)

I would think anyone thinking of buying a property would do a lot of research before committing to a purchase, maybe they have already looked into other countries but only those people can answer that question.

I believe mainly it's that Phuket has the best beaches, infrastructure, modernity, happening things to do, easily obtained foreign (home for many) foods and restaurants that other areas don't.

Chiang Mai-no beach

Hua Hin-o.k. infrastructure, food, check, check, beaches, not as nice.

Pattaya-..........uh.......yea....you live in Pattaya?

Samui-on equal terms as Phuket but from what I hear, whoa, worse traffic and pollution and getting worse by the day.

Krabi-white sand beaches are on the outer islands, but interesting.

Khao Lak-boring............north same.

Trang-hmmmmm....same as Krabi for me, interesting for the future.

Nakorn coast-missing farang friendly things

Coastline from Surat up to BKK, again interesting. Some nice beaches there and infrastructure.

Anyway.......way back when used to spend more time in Bali, but Indonesian Cuisine compared to Thai? Thai Lamborghini-Indo Prada.

Just another nut job. Masquerading in a Spider Man outfit. Probably spent the better part of his 20s living in his mother’s basement. Maybe there now.

Jackh: Please seek mental health therapy soon.

Best wishes,

Researched properies for 5 years and them spent 6 months looking for one we liked and were prepared to pay the price for

I do agree that there are many expats who perhaps haven't tasted alternatives, and hence have little on which to base their opinions. These can be negative as much as positive. I don't have a great deal of tolerance for people who offer views such as 'Phuket is crap' without elaborating why that's their opinion. Of course, not everyone who comes here is going to have a happy holiday or retirement, but again that's the case everywhere.

In my case, I haven't been a resident of my home country (UK) since 1995, and before moving permanently to Phuket 5 years ago, called Spain 'home' for 10 years. My work has always allowed me to live where I want, and whilst always having a 'home base', have lived and worked in many countries, from northern Russia to southern Chile. Operating in places that require 3 vehicles, 2 of them armed police escorts, to get to and from the airport (Lagos, Nigeria) gives you an appreciation of the freedom that we enjoy in Phuket. If you think Villa Market is expensive, try shopping for a dinner party in Luanda, Angola, that will make your eyes water.

For me, the most important criteria for where I live is having options to do what I want, when I want. In that respect (again, at least for my financial and physical capability), there are very few boxes that can't be ticked when it comes to Phuket.

Wrong forum for your question!

What answers do you expect from people they (still) live here?

For a more complex view you have to find people they stood here and decided to leave. This is much more interesting, believe me.

I live here too but I am far away from any shouting and cheering like some posters here do.

You will like man things on Phuket and you will hate a lot too. Everything up from your personality, your wishes and your expectations.

The tendency and development in living quality is clearly negativ. Unfortunatly the problems are increasing rapidly. The nice niches are smaller und more difficult to find.

It is getting worse here also. Seems most cities the world over are getting worse. Finding a few people that know the good areas/ least dangerous would be harder if I spoke to people not living there NOW.

Thank You for the idea, I'll try talking to some that have left.

As mentioned in a previous post, you may discover that many more people are leaving Phuket than are moving to Phuket. You should ask yourself, "Why?"

One reason definetely is the strong Baht. 4 years ago, you got almost 75 Baht to the pound, 50 Baht to the Euro and 40 Baht to the $ . Retirees that get their pension from abroad can't afford to live here anymore. Phuket is the most expensive place in Thailand.

The biggest problem i have had in Phuket is you can't buy deep fried Mars bars i think i will have to move

Well, off to Santa Maria, California for you my friend.

At the fairs, they have your deep fried Snickers as well as deep fried Twinkies.

Can you confirm where the "dangerous" areas are? I know a lot of good areas but aren't aware of any specifically dangerous areas....

Anywhere in Rawai alone late at night is Dangerous, mainly San Yuan road, Nai Harn Lake, All the hill roads...all dangerous late at night..
