Would like to know from all those who have Sat Navs in their cars (especially factory built in) here in Thailand.

What information is required to be entered in to your sat navs for it to recognise your chosen destination?

In the UK i understand it's usually just the postcode of the address you intend to find,

and in the US it's map co-ordinates of your destination.

So what does one use here in Thailand?

Depends where your going. Sometimes you need to check on google maps for some place close or if you can find it take the gps co ordinates and use them. Just typing the town will get you there. Normally. But spellings can be weird. Have fun :D

Sounds like it's a bit of hit & miss then?

When you say use google maps do you mean on your computer first before making your journey?

Where do you get the GPS co-ordinates from?

Biggest problems I have had using TomTom is getting the correct lane at complex junctions/intersections and agree with spelling of place names, transliteration issues.

Another big problem is the sat nav not knowing if you are on the top deck of a highway or driving on the road under it.

If I'm heading somewhere I don't know or have never been to before I usually look up the place on Google Maps the night before, I then try and find the same place on my Sat Nav so I have a rough idea of the location.

If the Sat Nav can't find the location I'm looking for I then have to search for the point on the Map on the Sat Nav. This is much easier with a portable Sat Nav which I can take up to my Condo when trip planning.

I've just used the TomTom app on the iPhone for getting around the UK - it was great and flawless. Extremely easy to use by simply adding in the Post Code.

Its a shame the addresses are not planned in such an organised manner.

I find 'Navigation by Hotel' the best option in Thailand - i.e. search for a hotel nearby your destination.

When your in google maps zoom in and right click on the place. The gps co ordinates show in the top.

My tom tom has no issues with elevated roads in BKK, even tells me when I should be on the "lower road".

Im using the Garmin Iphone app and it is simply wonderful for the price.

It can find any major business or office (ie immigration, makro, hotels etc), also wats and has english language input for addresses.
