Computers to be installed at schools, more scholarships offered

BANGKOK: -- Some 250,000 computers will be installed at all schools nationwide within the 2006 academic year, while more scholarships will be offered to needy students, Prime Minister Thaksin Shinawatra said here on Saturday.

In his weekly radio address, Mr. Thaksin thanked more than 2,000 students who had sent him New Year's greeting cards and wished him good health.

He said pictures on most of the cards were drawn by the students themselves.

Pledging that he would improve education in the country, Mr. Thaksin said on the occasion of National Children's Day that the 250,000 computers would be installed at every school within the 2006 academic year.

He also pledged that an annual revenue from the government-run two- and three-digit lottery amounting about Bt10 billion would be given away as scholarships.

He said more scholarships would be given to needy students in the future, but that the government last year awarded 400,000 scholarships to children's from families with modest incomes.

More than 6,000 students under the government-sponsored "One District One Scholarship" project have applied for scholarships and examinations to be held this month to select qualified candidates.

The government had also established several creative centres for children -- including an ICT Learning Centre -- at a major shopping mall in Bangkok, he said.

The Thailand Creative Design Center at which members have to pay a Bt420 annual fee has received much interest from children.

The Crown Property Bureau will pay membership fees for children from poor families.
