Thailand's Thaksin says amnesty key to reconciliation

JAKARTA, July 17, 2012 (AFP) - Thailand's fugitive former prime minister Thaksin Shinawatra Tuesday called for a highly-controversial amnesty, saying it is a "key to reconciliation" and long overdue.

"Everyone says the same thing, that reconciliation must include amnesty," he told a panel discussion at the Strategic Review Forum in Jakarta.

"It's long overdue for Thailand to bring about reconciliation. "If you learn how to forgive, that's the only key, it's the key to reconciliation. I'd like to urge all parties in Thailand to forgive."

Thailand's government in June said it was postponing voting in parliament on controversial "reconciliation" proposals that have stoked political tensions in the divided kingdom.

The bills are strongly opposed by opposition MPs who fear they will be used to grant an amnesty to Thaksin, ousted by royalist generals in a 2006 coup.

Thaksin, a former telecoms tycoon who lives in Dubai to avoid a jail term for corruption, is loved by many rural and poor Thais for his populist policies while in power, but hated by the elite who see him as a threat to the monarchy.

Thaksin's sister Yingluck Shinawatra is now prime minister following a landslide election win by her brother's party last year. One of the draft laws, which aims to amend the kingdom's constitution, has angered royalists who see it as an attempt to weaken the monarchy.

Thailand's Constitutional Court on Friday found complaints against plans by Yingluck's party to amend the constitution -- drawn up under the military junta that deposed Thaksin -- were unfounded.

Thaksin denied his desire to return to Thailand was linked to the court ruling. "I don't think the Constitutional Court has anything to do with (whether) I'm going back or not," he said. "We'd like to see the constitution amended in a democratic way.

" Thousands of royalist "Yellow Shirt" protesters blockaded parliament in May to prevent the house from discussing the reconciliation plans.

In 2010 mass protests by Thaksin's "Red Shirt" supporters against the previous government descended into the kingdom's worst civil violence in decades, with more than 90 people killed in a military crackdown.

Well he would say that.

I had a good chat a year or so ago with a very pooyai ex senior policeman, who actually taught thaksins class. His (and others) view was that the system couldn't allow him back without him showing some respect for the court system.

So, from the tops point of view, amnesty is a complete non starter.

One is inclined to ask, ''Just how many million reasons does Thaksin have for an amnesty as opposed to everyone?''

Yet again we see clearly demonstrated Thaksins arrogance and his contempt for basic common decency, and justice along with his delusional behavior pattern.

He is on the run he broke his bail he is a fugitive .Is he prepared to forgive and forget ?

That, ''forgive and forget scenario from Thaksin would be comparable to a chicken going to the dentists for a check up!!

All Thaksin wants is to get back to getting his hands into the state coffers and to occupy the seat of power irrespective of how it is done and at what cost.

Can't think of a reason to disagree with that

The bit (can I cut a bit from the story?) saying

"Thaksin denied his desire to return to Thailand was linked to the court ruling. "I don't think the Constitutional Court has anything to do with (whether) I'm going back or not," he said. "We'd like to see the constitution amended in a democratic way."

Begs the question I will continue to ask - what is the unambiguous definition of Thai democracy? TV posters refer to it in contradictory ways.

From the AFP piece:

... "It's long overdue for Thailand to bring about reconciliation. "If you learn how to forgive, that's the only key, it's the key to reconciliation. I'd like to urge all parties in Thailand to forgive."

So I guess the paymaster is saying never mind about the reds (and more) who died in street battles (cannon fodder paid by the paymaster) in 2010is selfish aims, so I wonder how long before thida and more reds scream as they did just recently when the paymaster sprouted something similar then aologized.

I guess he's starting to believe that changing the constitution is looking dicey, so try again on the amnesty angle.

This guy is the sole reason for the current political climate in Thailand. And reconciiliation is for his benefit only. The man is a coward. If he cares about Thais and Thailand then he needs to do one of 2 things. Shut up or come home and go directly to jail. Then I am sure we can all move forward.

He j is definitely not the soul reason. The whole story has been raked over 100 times, but wimpy and swayable courts are the biggest problem this country has.

Did the girl in the civic get her judgment yet? Does thaksins maid still own those shares.

expedient judgments not clearly in line with the law are the problem.

I hope Thaksin's maid, AND gardener do still hold the shares and when they were both asked to sign back the gazillion baht worth of stocks, they both said <SNIP!!!!!> right off, they belong to us biggrin.png .

On such contracts they have to sign a transfer of the shares without date. Even if they sell them, Thaksin can say that it is fraudulent as he has already the transfer from the gardener to the driver in the hand dated a day before. And of course all related documents stay with the big boss.

So not easy to snatch it. You can say many things about Thaksin but not that he is stupid.

exactly my point. The law is the law one day and the other not.

He cannot be forgiven for the damage he has done to Thailand. Period. If he had accepted his sentence and faded into insignifance, Thailand would have moved on. However he won't let Thailand move and and keeps stirring up trouble. Alot of people cannot forgive and forget what he has done.

As though he is the only guy riding on this political split. Your statements are naive in the extreme. If it was only his future riding on this, he would have had what he wanted ages ago.

If he is not stupid why does he hire such obviously stupid people. Ear medicine I wonder if Jutporn is still on his staff. My helicopter can't fly at night it has no lights. And the list goes on.

How many times has he said he was out of politics one day and changed his mind the next day. He has a mind that knows how to make money regardless of whether it is legal or illegal and hire yes men to insure that the situations are open for him to steal it.

I wonder who is the principle backer behind this Panel

the "Strategic Review Forum" in Jakarta?

Thaksin certainly can afford shills to make anything with a proper name

seem like a legitimate forum for him to have a Photo op and sound bite from.

Of course he must be "On Message" when he does speak.

He is on the run he broke his bail he is a fugitive .Is he prepared to forgive and forget ?

..

All Thaksin wants is to get back to getting his hands into the state coffers and to occupy the seat of power irrespective of how it is done and at what cost.

dam_n right siampolee ... He is on the run, broke his bail and is a fugitive.

And I truly believe that he is NOT ready to forgive and forget ... When he comes back first he wanna get back all those billions that he thinks belong to him. Second he will take "his" seat at the top of the government - and then all, each and everyone of those that was "against him" will be hunted for and put to jail or even worse.

So Thakins better stay in Dubai or havt the guts to come and serve his 2 years. Thailand isnt stable enough yet to forgive.

And for your understanding of what happened, there are millions who believe the other version

So he is actually saying that all the criminals, corrupt politicians {and there is a lot}, people who over stay there visas and on and on should be forgiven and patted on the back so that can commit the came crime again which history shown that most of them will...

In most countries in the world. You brake the law you go to jail and are put on probation.... and repeated offenders and then given more jail time...

Thailand wants to be a democratic country... They need to in force there own laws and international laws and need to set an example honesty and a concern for the Thai people... Not just a group that think they are above the law

It is an interesting paragraph.

"We'd like to see the the constitution amended in a Democratic way."

Who is "we"?

What changes do "we" want to make to the constitution?
