I Can'T Get My Netbook To Recognize Tv Tuner Card

Featured Replies

I have an acer aspire one 722 netbook. It has a mini-pcie slot on the bottom next to the bluetooth/wifi card. I installed an Avermedia A317 tv tuner card in it, but the computer doesn't recognize it. Like it doesn't show up in device manager, windows does not "find it" when I have it search for new hardware.

I suspect that while the Acer has a mini pcie on the motherboard, Acer may not have the bios set up so that the slot could be used.

my questions are if I have to do something with the BIOS (i know nothing of flashing with Bios) or if there is another way to get it to recognize the TV tuner card. Or if I am doing somethng wrong.

Thank you.

Go to the web site for the card and see if they have a downloadable driver for the type windows you are using.

plus one.... download the latest driver for your version of windows and then reseat the card...

as long as windows won't see it you won't be able to install a driver, however have a look under sound, gaming in device manager, the card might be there and if so you can install/update the driver.

Inside the device manager activate "show hidden devices"

OK, thanks for the responses. Unfortunately still doesn't work. I am running windows 7 home premium which came factory installed when I got the computer. It is 8 gigs Ram and 320gigs hdd (if that matters).

I went to the avermedia website and they have both drivers and the suite which includes their specialized TV software (which I guess would be used in addition to Windows media center). I downloaded and installed the suite, which includes the drivers for Windows 7 (64 bit which is what I have). When I ran the application software the application said it could not find a tv tuner card.

I also tried installing the driver alone from alienware. The same card is the card that ships on the alienware laptops and alienware calls it the m17. Installed the driver (alone) and windows still could not detect there was a tv tuner card in the mini-pcie slot.

EDIT:

I did some research on the old interweb and apparently there is an issue with this particular computer. I don't quite understand what is being said but apparently Acer "whitelisted" the second mini pci-e slot (the first mini pci-e slot is taken up with the factory wifi and bluetooth), so that only an Acer 3g card could fit.

Does anyone know what this means or how to overcome this?

I am attaching relevant portions of the conversation on it

  1. Currently there is no way to use the extra mini pcie slot in the AO722. I had to learn that the hard way icon_sad.gif

    Hi Paul,
Thank you for your comment. I am very sorry to hear about that icon_sad.gif
After reading more about it the conclusion seems to be that at this point: only Acer whitelisted 3G cards working in the extra mini pci-e slot.

Has this been your experience Paul?
    Best regards,

PS If this is the case I hope that in the future perhaps a modified BIOS can unlock the usefulness of the 2nd mini pci-e slot.

I’ve found those sites also and further internet scrounging showed that an unlocked BIOS could not enable the second slot. icon_sad.gif It seems that it is hardwired to usb and not a fully featured pcie. Its only purpose is, like you said, to allow a 3g card that can utilize the crippled slot. The broadcom HD decodar card and the original wifi card did not work in the second slot. Hopefully I am wrong and it can be hacked/modified in some way to utilize it in the future.

    Hi Paul,
Thank you for the additional info.
I think you are right about it not being full pcie, but I do hope that at least full support for USB based mini pci-e cards is eventually unlocked…
If only Acer had put configured the 2nd slot for full pcie capability and msata support would be wonderful too!
Thanks again for the info and good luck in your computing endeavors!

One more thing: I see discussion about using second slot and bios. When I changed wi-fi card in my current netbook I must unlock bios and this forum http://www.bios-mods.com/forum/ was very helpful, ppl modified white list (or black, I don’t remember) in my bios and new card is working.
