Computer (Or Brain) Meltdown

Featured Replies

I have really done it now. My computer has had multiple problems of late. I wont decsribe the lot but today the Outlook mail program would not load. I spent several hours online trying various solutions that people who had the same problem used. Nothing worked. Then I got drawn into reconfiguring my mail server. Without thinking I did it and ended up blowing away all of my previous mail message files, address book, everything. OMG. I dont know how to recover this and its a major problem. Spare me the messages telling me how stupid I was. What I am looking for now is some computer tech here in Chiang Mai that can speak OK English that (for a fee of course) could come to my house and see if this can be recovered. Anybody have a reccomendation?

They probably only reinstall the OS.

You can try to search in your computer for your old mails: outlook express search for *.dbx

microsoft outlook search for *.pst

If your mail server is IMAP, then all your messages will still be on the server (probably). If your server was POP and the messages were only on your computer, then you'll have to search for the mail database files as cmbe suggests. If you can't find those and you don't have a backup, you're stuffed. If you can find them then put them somewhere safe (external backup), sort out your software issues then import.

Yes, do that before doing anything else. Most of the time when people thing they lost stuff, it isn't really gone.

Thanks for the replies. I am scrambling here. I managed to get access to my e-mail history by going through my gmail account online. Outlook will still not open at all on my computer. Yes I searched for .pst files. Found a few but they from several years ago! Could it be because I havent backed up my Outlook folders? Doh! Oh well. If you see a guy with a very frazzled look tomorrow at Pantip, say HI, it will probably be me.

The .PST file is by default a hidden file. Make everything visible in your explorer before starting to search.

Going forward, use Gmail. Outlook and Microsoft are a pain.

The kids at Computer Plaza ( just to the left when you come in the front door) usually manage my complaints inexpensively and well.
