webfact
Five police killed in Thai south roadside bomb YALA, July 26, 2012 (AFP) - Five policemen were killed and another was critically wounded Wednesday in a roadside bomb attack in Thailand's restive south, police said, as an uptick in violence since the start of Ramadan continued. Insurgents detonated a bomb hidden by a bridge in the Raman district of Yala province as six policemen travelled on the road in a pickup truck. The blast overturned the truck, sending it plunging into a canal and killing four of the policemen immediately. Another died on the way to hospital while a sixth was in a critical condition there. After the attack an unknown number of insurgents seized a dozen firearms including pistols and machine guns. The police had been deployed to protect teachers who have been frequent targets of militants. A shadowy insurgency, without clearly stated aims, has raged in Thailand's three southernmost provinces -- Pattani, Narathiwat and Yala -- since 2004. Daily bomb or gun attacks have targeted soldiers and civilians, Buddhists and Muslims, claiming more than 5,000 lives in eight years. A state of emergency is in force in the worst-affected parts of the region which rights campaigners say gives tens of thousands of military troops based there legal immunity, fuelling rights abuses. Authorities had warned that militants were likely to step-up attacks during the Islamic holy month. -- (c) Copyright AFP 2012-07-

Renbe
Muslims killing people during ramadan, what a horrible, sickening terrorism. I hope the Thai government will find a way to end this carnage for once and for all. webfact
SOUTH CRISIS Security strengthened after Yala bomb attack The Nation Photo : Nakarin Shinworakomon YALA: -- Yala authorities have strengthened security in the province following a car bomb attack in its Raman district that killed five police on Wednesday. Yala Governor Detraj Simsiri said the Wednesday fatal attack has caused panic among the public as insurgents previously focused their attack in the downtown. "But this time, the insurgents attacked in the outer area like Raman district which is different from before. Authorities concerned should have to analyse the situation," the governor said. On Wednesday, the six-man squad from Tha Thong Police Station, which was assigned to escort teachers at U Poh Shool, was on a mobile patrol before arriving near a bridge where a silver Isuzu pickup truck with hidden explosives was parked. The truck exploded, hitting the police vehicle. The detonation method, such a remotely by wire, mobile phone or twoway radio, and the types and quantities of explosives were not yet identified. The governor claimed change of target may be caused because the insurgents could not penetrate into the downtown because of security, so they turned to the areas outside. After the incident, the governor said, he already assigned security agencies to strengthen the safety and security for people and government premises. Meanwhile Pol Col Sukhon Sriarun, a Yala police chief, said a joint police force of Raman and Kotabaru districts on Thursday conducted 18 separated raids in Raman, Kotabaru and Thathong district to hunt for the culprits and to collect evidence following the Wednesday attack. He said the raid at a house of Kaman Chaichana in Tambon Wangpaya of Raman district found a mobile phone clip showing a scene just after the attack in Raman district. A suspect was also detained for further investigation to know the intention of the clip. Witnesses meanwhile told police that the a pickup followed the pickup of police on Wednesday. After the explosion hit the police pickup, about ten men wearing hoods jumped out of the vehicle, run to the scene and snatched six M4 carbines, two handguns and three bullet proof vests before escaping. -- The Nation 2012-07-

Popular Post sunshine51
Why can't the free nations all get together and with all the bomb detecting technology and the great mercenaries available, set in motion a military/guerrilla sweep of all hotspots, country by country until this cancer is eliminated!! As a participant in the Southeast Asian War Games (Second Place Team)...A military solution will simply not work. There must be a political solution to this mess in the south and in order to facilitate said political solution at the bare minimum, both sides must be willing to make sacrifices for the common good...so far nobody wants to sacrifice anything so the dilemma propagates. Let's say your idea is implemented....by the Thai military...since the "enemy" wears no distinguishable uniform the only way one could be "sure" (if that) the mission would be accomplished, is that if every single man, woman and child is killed. Since the border with Malaysia is very fluid (hence present day extremeist support from there) many people, not only of Muslim faith woulkd flee across the border causing other problems that will only manifest in southern Thailand at a later date...when they return "home". This problem didn't start in 2004, that incident only exacerbated a couple centuries old problem. THere is no "Quick Fix" to this mess.

The only way against that is the Chinese way. Take all available lands and give them with special advantages and incentive to Thais who are willing to settle there until the ratio of Buddhist to Muslim is 100 to 1. And close the border with Malaysia with only a few check posts. We could also ask Abhisit to tell his good friends on the other side of the fence to stop sending terrorists. But did he even discussed the matter when he was there ?

But did he even discussed the matter when he was there ? The Thai-Mal border requires only a "border pass" for those who live along it...in other words...the Thai provinces and the Malaysian States to enter the respective countries. Supposedly these border passes are only valid for a distance of up to 50 KM's each way....hmmmm. One measure which the Thai Government should do is treat these "border dwellers" of Malaysia the same way the Thai's treat everybody else that enters Thailand....They need a passport...or get arrested if caught without one/proof of having one. This wouldn't be the be all or end all but at least step in the right direction.

Talking of education have a look at the history of the southern provinces discussed in some detail including maps, following the bomb attacks in Hat Yai etc a few months agp. The situation is not as simplistic as Buddhist v. Muslim with ethnicity, nationalism and being peripheral in terms of political and socio-economic progress. simple1
Muslim leaders and peace advocates decried the attack. Nimu Makaje, former deputy chairman of the Yala Provincial Islamic Committee, said the assailants were not Muslims because they did not abide by Allah's teaching that his followers should help promote peace and unity. This was prior to the murders listed in the above post. It is 100% against Islam to kill inside a mosque, just as it is to kill in a church. Who are these people doing the killing/what organisation do they represent? Hopefully with the three captured murderers some light will be shed on this question.
