Even more annoying than late arrivals (or departures) is the sight of people just yakking on a cell phone or looking (hopefully? aimlessly?) at a phone to see...what?

I honestly think cell phones are the bane of modern life (their one saving grace possibly being emergencies, as in life and death, not the emergency of not knowing whether to buy this cheese or that cheese in the supermarket...what do you think, my love?).

What bs, what go hok (as the Thais say).

The sight of so many people being obsessed with some useless text message is for me the most depressing sight available to the modern eye.

I mean, <deleted>, what did we do before we held these prison-guards in our hands all day????

Talking of which, i find that a major ABUSE of time. Each to their own of course, but im agog often at how addicted people are to their phones. I do find it pretty rude too if im in someones company and they cant seem to leave their phone alone. Thankfully doesnt happen that often! Some people have their phones hooked up to everything (facebook, email, etc) 24/7 ..and constantly check every notification. Its like OCD! Even saw a little kid the other day walking with parents down the street..ignoring everything around him to play on his ipad. Safety aspects aside, i just dont personally get why his parents would be ok with that.

I love technology, but everything in balance. If im out with friends then im out with friends..im not on the phone half out with friends, whilst letting the fb world know that im out with friends. blink.png

Eeeeeeeeeeeee..what a rant lol! laugh.png

It takes much to upset me, but having a phone strapped to your fingertips or ears does me swede in! So anti social!

What irks me is people on this forum, who attempt to waste peoples time, by asking for proof of statements that members make, while trying to help others. Usually it's the ones who've been in Thailand "long time", that do this, - like nobody else in the world knows anything. Maybe they think they're being clever, but I, for one, won't be offering advice anymore. Rant over.

Can you provide some examples of that ?

Thai time aside (and yes, it annoys me but I have resigned myself to it as I must to live here) I actually found a lack of punctuality starting to become rather common among younger people ouitside of Thailand. Lots of young people think it is Ok to call/text that he/she is running late AT the appointment time when I am already waiting!

It's a bit like mobile phones: many people in office environments these days think it is OK to take calls during a meeting. Or to keep fiddling with their devices (smartphones, ipads) during a meal.

Sure it is bad manners as far as I am concerned but after seeing it happen over and over again, I think it is a lot more acceptable among youngsters, but dowright rude for our "older" generation.

My favourite is when they ring after the appointment time from their apartment to say they'll be late because of the traffic... Yet they've not yet set off.

It is lack of respect. They would not be late to meet the Queen of England.

I have cut off so many potential Thai friends because of this.

Not turning up for job interviews is routine here possibly because of the 0.5% unemployment rate. They can always find other work.

If they dont think your important, chances are they dont think she is important...

Personally - I dont think either of you are important 555 :P

I have a real lack of tolerance for lateness, but when accompanied with a 'pre-warning' (i.e. you are called in advance of the appointment and given the information that someone is going to be late) I find it acceptable as effort has been made.

What I hate is no warning, no excuse and with it no respect... IMO it all comes down to respect.

Most of my friends know where I stand on this and will drop an sms is they are running behind schedule, stuck in traffic etc...

A few years ago my Wife and I ordered some furniture - I refused to pay a deposit as I wanted to inspect the work once it arrived at our condo.

The delivery date was set (a Friday) they missed it but confirmed delivery for Saturday and missed that. They also missed a Sunday delivery. My parents were arriving on the Monday afternoon and I wanted the work out of the way before their arrival.

On the Monday morning my wife and I attended my friends Engagement ceremony, my Wife had to leave that early to receive the delivery of our custom built furniture.

They were late again and upon enquiry (phone call) they were nearby (approximately 500m. An hour later they were still nearby, same excuse, same location, stuck in traffic (my wife could see the traffic from the window !!)...

I suggested to my Wife that we cancel there and then - We did. The manager of the company called up and complained, he couldn't understand why we had cancelled that that they would loose money because they had already built our furniture.

Tough - They were repeatedly un-reliable and lied about it.

We had another company do an excellent job a month later.

With this experience I learned never leave a deposit if I can get away with it.

^ dont understand why companies dont say something along the lines of "we hope to deliver your item in X days, but please allow up to X days in case of any problems with may be incurred.; We will contact you one day before delivery time, to confirm a delivery appointment".

Mind you, they probably have customers messing them around with time also.

Maybe thats what it comes down to, everyone is so used to everyone not turning up on time, that nobody bothers to make sure they are.

If going to a restaurant or friends house on a night out I leave my phone at home, seriously, if I miss any calls while out I will wait til they call back.

If it's really important they will.

Before we had mobile phones we had to plan everything meticulously and didn't have any flexibility. With them we have lots of flexibility. Planned to meet someone but decided to go to a different area and want to change plans? Then just text them. The mobile phone is one of the best inventions ever. Just because you don't like or understand them doesn't mean that others don't find them useful. You obviously are missing out if you think mobile phones are only for mindless texts and checking on cheese orders.

Don't have a mobile if you don't want one, but stop criticizing others who use them.
