Relocate Hire Vehicles In Australia For Free

Featured Replies

I have been researching relocating hire vehicles in Australia for free.

There are several websites that you can use for this service.

Travelling to Oz in October and would like to use this service from Brisbane to Sydney.

Has anybody used this method and are there any pitfalls or is it just a good win/win for hirer and company?

A link to one of the companies: http://www.transfercar.com.au/brisbane.html

Any information greatly appreciated.

Drove from Sydney to Perth in 6 days in a Hi-Lux camper conversion. AU$1 per day and they paid the fuel. Awesome fun. There are slower trips available for a little more money. Very cheap way around Australia.

Hi there Ubon,

I've done this a few times via http://www.standbyrelocs.com/.

You can email them, Not sure if you can book from outside Oz.

The website changes daily.

Look for the deals that give you a fuel allowance - it's very expensive in Oz.

Generally the 'mileage allowance' means you have to go straight down the highway.

Three days is standard for your proposed journey. It takes ~ 2 hr to pick up or check in vehicle.

Brissy - the base is reasonably close to the airport, while in SYD the base is walking distance.

Beware stuff like expensive expressways in Brissy, traffic a fawking nightmare in SYD. AA

If you have to drive point to point it's only a maximum 11 hours drive BNE to SYD and countless automated speed cameras - bit of a pain in the neck. If your intent is to check out the beaches at a minimum travel cost better to get the likes of Greyhound pass with stop offs. Best beaches are between the Gold Coast & Northern NSW, also Nambucca & Port Stevens. Many great beaches in Sydney. Remember still a bit cool in October - around 23/25%

Thanks for the info everyone.

I am just playing with the idea at the moment.

We have four days at the end of our visit to Oz which is undecided, starting in Brisbane, plus the last night when we depart which is a midday flight so will need to be in Sydney the night before.

Maybe will decide to fly BNE/SYD and just hire a car and do the Gold & Sunshine Coasts.

Just my personal opinion, but I would recommend the Sunshine Coast at Mooloolaba and Noosa. Gold Coast is great if you have kids for the theme parks - don't forget to use internet booking, as you may remember some Oz hotels have a nasty habit of charging per person.

EDIT: Direct flights from airport near to Noosa (Maroochydore) to SYD
