BANGKOK: -- The government yesterday set up a permanent operation centre, integrating 17 ministries under three deputy prime ministers, to deal with the unrest in the South.

Prime Minister Yingluck Shina-watra convened an urgent meeting with senior officials in charge of national security at 11.30am yesterday at Government House to discuss fears insurgent attacks are getting more frequent.

After the meeting, Deputy Prime Minister General Yuthasak Sasiprapha told reporters that Yingluck wanted to review the policy and see if anything can be improved. He said the meeting had concluded that the strategy was moving in the right direction, but it could be enhanced further for efficiency.

Yuthasak went on to say that he, along with fellow deputy prime ministers Chalerm Yoobamrung and Yongyuth Wichaidit, would be in charge and will coordinate with relevant agencies. The centre, which has yet to be named, will be situated at the Internal Security Operations Command and rely on its staff and officials from the 17 ministries and other state agencies.

The centre will initially be funded by the amount earmarked for projects in the three southernmost provinces, he said, adding that details about the centre, its work, strategy and the 2012-2013 budget would be provided at a workshop on August 8.

Meanwhile, intelligence sources said that up to 10 Songkhla-based insurgents had helped local insurgents launch an ambush in Pattani's Ma-Yor district last Saturday, killing four soldiers. Three suspects have been apprehended for questioning so far.

The Songkhla-based operatives were reportedly newly trained and had carried out this attack as a drill, sources said. Pattani governor Theera Minthrasak said intelligence officials were verifying whether there were any insurgents from other parts of the country who might have played a hand in last Saturday's attack.

Theera said that thanks to the security cameras installed by the Interior Ministry, clear images were captured of the attack being carried out. Hence, he said, he had ordered a survey of how many of such units were installed in the deep South and how many more were needed in hostile areas or at-risk localities. A large number of cameras with different specifications belong to or are operated by police, the military or local authorities.

Police said all or most of the attackers behind the attack were in Thailand and were being tracked down, adding that most of the likely suspects were Pattani locals and were lying low.

This needs a more detailed explanation.

The "situated at the Internal Security Operations Command and rely on its staff and officials from the 17 ministries and other state agencies" sounds like various resources are used which are already funded.

Which projects down South will be left with no or inadequate funding and may or may not need to be shelved or postponed now? How much does this Centre cost in the few months remaining in this fiscal year? With billions thrown away used to pledge rice prices, the government is unable to find 50 or so mililon for a centre?

Yesterday's article when we just had Dept. PM Pol. Captain Chalerm put in charge it was mentioned

"The Cabinet also approved a budget of Bt391 million yesterday to cover allowances, supplies and logistical support for military personnel based in the region."

and

"The Cabinet has also approved in principle an improvement in the compensation payments for people suffering from the violence, future budget allocations for recruiting civil defence volunteers and citizen patrols for the period of 2012-2015. Face it, unless they move some heavy protection down there for the army, they are periodically going to be sitting ducks, particularly if they continue to move people around by moped. The bombing of the hotel the other day, shows that the insurgents/terrorists can largely move around untouched and that the level of information gathering by the army/civilian forces is completely insufficient. The bad guys are going to keep winning for a very long time unless they come up with a far better strategy.

Islamic preacher charged with child porn

A controversial Islamic preacher charged with child pornography offences and threatening a terrorist attack on Sydney's Mardi Gras parade has been granted bail by a Sydney court.

Ibrahim Siddiq-Conlon, 35, is accused of making a hoax terrorist threat on the Facebook page of Today FM's Kyle and Jackie O Show.

He allegedly outlined a "terrorist threat" to the annual Sydney parade that celebrates gay lifestyles and diversity, in a post on the show's online chat forum.

Mr Siddiq-Conlon is also facing two separate charges relating to use of a laptop to access online child pornography and a charge of possessing child abuse material.

In granting bail in the NSW Supreme Court today, Justice Geoff Bellew banned Mr Siddiq-Conlon from using the internet and possessing a phone with internet capabilities.

He also made it a condition that the preacher not enter any international point of departure from Australia or apply for a new passport.

Justice Bellew also imposed a strict night curfew and daily police reporting regime on Mr Siddiq-Conlon, who will live with his mother in Cowra while out on bail.

The preacher is forbidden from being in the presence of any children under 18, except for his own, and banned from going anywhere near schools, daycare centres or preschools.

The court heard that Mr Siddiq-Conlon had already breached earlier bail conditions by using the internet to contact his wife and children in Indonesia and downloading legal files and documents related to his work as an architect.

Justice Bellew said that, given the previous breach, he was surprised prosecutor Jody Nunn was not opposing bail on this occasion, but he said he was "loath to interfere" with the crown's decision.

Mr Siddiq-Conlon founded Sharia4Australia in Sydney's south-west to agitate for Islamic law and the introduction of sharia courts.

The preacher, from Lakemba, is due back in Sydney Central Local Court tomorrow.

I was in the Arnedale Centre in 1996 when the IRA bombs went off, a shopping centre in Manchester, many people just going about their everyday lives, nothing to do with NI, the gripes of the IRA or the gripes of their blinkered followers..... just a bunch of people that get a thrill out of hurting others in the name of ............

Same down south here in Thailand, just a bunch of thugs that like to hurt others and use a name to justify it.

The IRA moved their bombing to the UK because the security service's in NI had made life to difficult for them.

Yep, and last time I looked Northern Ireland was part of the UK and will remain so all the while the majority of fhe province`s population want that.
