I retired to Thailand recently. I tried to get my former employer, a state government in the US, to direct deposit my small pension check to my Thai wife's account. She has an account with Bangkok Bank in her name only.

Gave my work her account number, her name, the banks routing number, and a swift code which I never heard of. Apparently my work hasn't either. They tried several times to get it to go to no avail. I finally gave up and gave them my bank info in the US.

The payment is made out to me, but going to her account for deposit. Not sure if that is a problem or not.

Can someone give me some pointers on how to get this done?

Thanks.

the best is to deposit to your US bank account then you do ach transfer from your bank to bkk in New York. To your bkk account number

If you think you might be sending money to Thailand again in the future I would advise you to open a Bangkok Bank account in New York.

Transfer of funds from your employer's bank in the US to your Bangkok Bank account in New York should work exactly the same as the transfer of funds between any other banks in the US.

Transfer of funds from your Bangkok Bank account in New York to your wife's Bangkok Bank account in Thailand should be painless if not free (better confirm that with them as it may well be free of charge).

I gave the state the swift code, but there is no place in their computer system for a swift code. A lady there I talk to said she had been doing this for a lot of years and this is the first time she has heard of a swift code.

Can you open an account with Bangkok Bank in New York via Bangkok Bank in Thailand or how is that done? I assumed it had to be done in person.

Thanks.

I believe you don't need a BB account in New York. But I think you can transfer the payment via BB New York directly to her local BB account. You might have a conversation w/ the head office of BB in BKK about how to arrange this if your former employer can't figure it out.

When we set up direct deposit of my husband pension check (from a U.S. private pension), our Bangkok Bank branch gave us a little card with their address, phone, swift code and routing no. It says "(for USA)" after the routing number. I think the U.S. bank needs the routing number, account number and account name -- not the swift code.

Incidentally, we opened our Bangkok Bank account in Chiang Mai. Hubby's pension is routed thru the NYC branch, but we never went there and opened an account.

I don't understand why the OP doesn't open a Bangkok Bank account in his own name -- the dangers of turning over all your assets & income to a Thai partner have been well documented on this forum.

You don't open a Bangkok Bank account at the New York branch, you open a Bangkok Bank account in Thailand and have the pension direct deposited into your Thai BB account via the New York branch. You only have to give them the BB EFTS number (026008691) and your 10 digit account number and the money will show up in your Thai account within a day or two of deposit
