MrMuddle
So many people here are saying that they have cancelled any ideas of going to Thailand for a holiday, because frankly, they think that its is dangerous and are scared. Then it's a great time to come as accommodation will be surplus and the rates should be less. In my experience, whenever tourist numbers are down, hotel rates go up but hey, this is Thailand ! Incredible how some of you guy's manage to survive here in Thailand. All booking sites for Thai hotels have prices for high season and low season and many times even last minute deals. And guess what ? The prices for low season are a lot cheaper than for high season. But don't let that stop you from spouting ridiculous generalizations. DP25
Don't believe this story actually happened. As if a serial Thai basher is going to walk around with a t-shirt that says Thailand on it at home. Strangers don't normally go up to strangers and start commenting on their shirts and giving you their life story anyway, let alone having it happen all the time. Just a creative excuse for a bit more Thai bashing.

Jake829
I have got to say in 14 years of being in the los my first and only rip off experince was my very first time in the kingdom but it was my own mistake getting in a taxi with no meter from Wat po & just told him where I was staying..so during the journey he how many times I'd been to Thailand..I said "it's my first time" lol..so just near my hotel he diverts to a one way street and says "you get out here" and btw farang that's 2500 baht!!! When I was told from the hotel no more than 150 baht from Wat po to victory monument, so a fraca ensued which I gave him 200bt he then proceeded to grab something from under his seat but by that happened I had already elbowed him in the face and promptly scarpered to the hotel, when I told them the story they wasnt in the least surprised and just told me "this is Thailand" since I have learnt the language vocally and written & savvied up and since I've had not want piece of barney rubble with Thais in work related or travel..on aggro I've had is with pissed up tommy tourist, there more of a hazard after a few bevs! Berkshire
Geez, another ridiculous doom and gloom, the demise of Thailand, "if only they knew" thread. Give me a break. Honestly, every time I read one of these, I'm always optimistic that IT WOULD result in fewer tourists coming to Thailand. But unfortunately, it never happens. More and more comes every year. Bummers. You pessimist need to do better. Much, MUCH better!

spidermark
I am on my 15 monthly trip back back to Queensland from my home in Thailand. Getting around, i usually wear a T shirt with THAILAND or SAMUI printed on the front. I am amazed at how many times i have been confronted by people who have been to Thailand on holiday or have friends who have. They all say the same "how could you live in such a place" most have stories of being ripped off by Tuk Tuk drivers, Taxi drivers or Jet Ski operators, and some have been attacked mostly by angry Tuk Tuk drivers and their mates ! All of these incidents have taken place in either Pattaya or Phuket, with Phuket being the worst. There has been no reports of incidents in either Bangkok, Koh Samui or Chaing Mai. These stories go around very quickly and it really scares people off coming to Thailand, no wonder the tourism industry is taking a bashing !Its about time the authorities, especially the police changed their ways. One woman told me that her husband was bashed by a gang of Tuk Tuk drivers in Phuket because he was arguing that their driver was demanding more than he had previously agreed to. Apparently, the police arrived and told the Tuk Tuk drivers to go away, then invited her husband to go to the police station to make a report only to be told that he had no proof as the Tuk Tuk drivers were not there?. So many people here are saying that they have cancelled any ideas of going to Thailand for a holiday, because frankly, they think that its is dangerous and are scared. When are these officials going to wake up ! It is not gonna happen. This administration is one of the least competent in many years. But the next one will be too. There is no will to fight the good fight. The money travels all the way to the top. It is amazing how powerful the Tuk Tuk and taxi goons are. The police and the govt., are scared to death of them. GreenSnapper
I arrived at Swampy on Wednesday, walked down the escalators without breaking my neck, booked a ticket to Makkasan at a cost of 35 baht, left Makkasan and walked round the corner to the Mrt, and booked a ticket to the Thailand Cultural Centre for 18 baht. Nobody tried to rip me off, nobody called me a "hansum man" ( I'm disappointed to report ), no ladyboys accosted me and asked me "hey, where you go?", nothing. A very straightforward trip from Swampy to downtown without being molested or ripped off.......at a cost of 53 baht. I feel cheated. You're just not handsome, Blether. How about getting a nose correction, or buy some whitening cream?
