Around 5,000 people in Karen State’s Hpa-an Township have been forced to leave their homes due to flooding, according to a report by The Myanmar Times. The newspaper said that the Salween River, which flows through the area, has risen by more than one meter since late last week. The state-run Kyemon newspaper reported on Aug. 4 that 5,136 people in Hpa-an Township and 220 people in Hlaingbwe Township had been forced to leave. Heavy rain in many parts of the country has also caused flooding in Irrawaddy, Pegu, Tenasserim and Rangoon divisions and Mon and Arakan states.
