If not a rental scooter yes, you can take, not that expensive...

Seatran, Raja, or Songterm ferries all do.... all running about every hour.

I would make sure your license sticker is up to date... wink.png

Was asked for my rego number but not if it was a rental ... Girl I met on way to ferry was on a samui rental bike which she had no issue taking off or returning to samui...

As with many things in Thailand, it's not an absolute. You didn't encounter a problem and neither did the lady you met but that does not mean it will always be the case.
