Friend 'shocked' by reports of Kiwi killed in Thailand

'Large tattooed' Kiwi accused of stabbing in Thailand

PATTAYA: -- The business partner of a New Zealand man says she was "shocked" to hear reports that he had been stabbed to death during a bar fight in Thailand.

Police arrested Swedish man Andreas Ringvall, 40, and charged him with murdering Robert E Hollick, 43, from New Zealand, according to Thailand's The Nation.

Hollick was stabbed multiple times in his neck and back at 1.40am on Tuesday in Pattaya, the report said. He was pronounced dead in hospital.

Swedish Man Arrested for Murder in Pattaya

Wachiraporn Janrut

Pattaya: -- Police received a report early morning today that there was a bar fight between two foreigners – Swedish and Kiwi - in front of Arika Lodge in Pattya. A New Zealand man was found at the scene of the incident, badly injured with lots of bloods from being stabbed three times at his neck and back by a knife. He was sent to Pattaya Memorial hospital and was later pronounced dead at the hospital.

Swedish man Andreas Ringvall, 40, and his Thai girlfriend Dao Pholutsa, 26, were arrested and charged with murdering Robert E Hollick, 43, from New Zealand. A Swedish-Thai couple seemed to be drunk when the police arrived at the incident scene.

The cause of the bar fight is still not totally clear as there are two different reports from two sources.

Mual Samat, 34, a taxi motorcyclist, told police that Ringvall had a quarrel with Hollick after Dao played with Hollick's pet dog inside a bar. Mual said after Ringval sent his girlfriend back to his room, he returned to the bar and attacked Hollick with a knife, reported The Nation News.

According to Thairath newspaper, the witness Ms. Supisara Vechsuwan, 47, the owner of the bar close to where the incident happened, said that Ringvall and his girlfriend Dao had a drink at her bar earlier. Then Mr. Hollick walked in with a dog which ran to the couple. Ringvall and Dao were not happy about it, leading to a bad loud argument. Staff at the bar including herself stopped them from a fight. They all split up but later on Ringvall and Dao came back at the bar with a kitchen knife looking for Hollick. When they both saw Hollick walking with the dog near the bar, Ringvall attacked Hollick and stabbed him several times to death, reported Thairath.

From questioning the two suspects by police, Dao who seemed to be drunk still, claimed that she had a drink with her boyfriend at the bar until Hollick turned up with a dog which was running aggressively toward them. Then Ringvall shouted at Hollick who didn’t like it and started attacking her boyfriend first. Her boyfriend had to use the knife to protect himself. The police didn’t find Dao’s statement convincing. However, Ringval refused to say anything to the police.

He will be charged with murder and get a hefty sentence for admitting the crime. However with the trouble with tourism in Thailand mainly in Phuket and now Pattaya, the Government may want to make an example of this idiot and sentence him to DEATH.

Lets hope he is given the death penalty. An "eye for an eye!"

Yes, given the success of death penalties, cruel punishments (drawing & quartering, floggings etc) in wiping out crime..............hang on it didn't wipe it out at all, did it?

Its not about redemption, crime reduction...it's about revenge, and winnowing the people from the herd who can't play with others. If somebody stabbed my son-mother-brother-whatever in the neck I'd want the killer dead.

Remembers me to the stabbing of an US Marine by a English Muay Thai fighter in Phuket two years ago.

Similar small incident blown out with a knive and death!

The English guy escaped first to Cambodia and was caught at an English airport some weeks later.

He still sits in GB waiting for the talking of Thai and English authorities.

He does not like the free flight back to Phuket!

One thing that does surprise me is the age of the guy who did it, I have been in a similar situation but was around 24 at the time, and was honestly just being friendly when invited to a back room of a bar where some guy pulled a knife. I was like dude, I haven't got the slightest interest in your girlfriend whatsoever, crazy guy, thankfully he didn't stab me, probably more trying to scare me but he seemed a little stressed with his gf's antics, culture shock and all. Really doing something like that deserves a punch in the mouth but I just resorted to speaking with the guy. I guess the girl here has been playing with his head and other issues/stress of being in a foreign land, the swede just had a gut's full and lost it on an unfortunate fellow. Am in no way condoning his actions though.

Really???

Agree. I think there has to be more to it than that. The Girlfriend pats the dog so the boyfriend kills the owner, ummm????

There are conflicting media reports, one media outlet states:"Mr. Hollick walked in with a dog which ran to the couple. Ringvall and Dao were not happy about it, leading to a bad loud argument.

And still people want to visit Pattaya?

Not all of Pattaya is like this. Things like this happen all over the world. I've been to Pattaya twice and didn't see anything like this. But I don't hang around drunks in the early hours of the morning. Pattaya is pretty safe most of the time. I didn't feel any bad vibes there at all.

Why does Thai law allow bar keepers to continue to sell alcohol to customers that are Drunk?

What a stupid thing to say.

Wow is getting drunk in a bar illegal?

Definately illegal in Victoria Australia. Both the patron and the licencee can be charged.

You are correct harsh punishment will never wipe out crime....nothing will, but soft punishments has led to an general increase in crime throughout the world. Do gooders that believe that the criminal is the real victum have a lot to answer for.

So what studies do you base this claim on? The punishments for violent crime were much harsher one or two centuries ago, and the likelihood of dying as a victim of violent crime was also much higher in those days...

Like all studies on subjects that are not absolute you can choose a study to support your point of view. When crimes are shown to reduce it is because of the present governments efficient criminal justice system. When crime actually increases it is then due to increased reporting. To retain political power or obtain political power it is important, often essential, to show how you have or will reduce crime. So it is therefore necessary for governments to show favourable crime figures. The truth however is often the opposite.

Murders carried out for financial gain are down, not because of the penalty if caught but due to the fact that such crimes show small returns whereas fraud via cards and the Internet show hugh gains. Better health and medical facilities prevent many deaths but not the actual criminal intent. The prison populations are in general at all time highs, this is shown to reduce crimes because these criminals are not 'available' to commit more crimes. Many crimes are not included in statistics for various reasons but mainly to reduce the figures. This subject is too complicated to cover in a short response and while figures can be made to prove anything as accountants often state there are little statistic to support that going easy on punishments actually reduce crime. If it did then why have any punishment at all as it would mean no crime. One serious crime that is increasing and generally accepted as such is child sexual crimes and present punishments are totally inadequate to reduce and prevent this appalling crime.

I found it is quite difficult avoiding aggressive people at times in Thailand, because you do not know the guy you are saying a friendly hello to at the bar, restaurant or the club. Because they come from different cultures, it is harder to "sniff out" Jabba the Hutt, you may believe you are talking with Princess Laya, but infact you are talking with a Wookie..

Totally agree, a good friend recently picked up who appeared to be a pretty and sane bar girl in a Patong club.... they left the club and an hour later I get a phone call from my friend, in desperation because the girl had disappeared into his hotel bathroom and returned 5 mins later a total lunatic wielding a razor blade, tried to slash his face up and then became hell bent on throwing herself off the balcony to her doom. The poor guy didn't know what to do and resorted to sitting on her and calling me for help... evidently she had taken something in the bathroom and a sudden Jekyll/ Hyde transformation took place.

Still gives me shivers now, last I saw her in the club she was smiling widely and walking arm in arm with my mate, then I open the hotel room door to see her wide eyed and frothing at the mouth like a wild animal. We literally had to carry her out the room and out the hotel. God knows what would have happened had she actually managed to throw herself out the window but I don't expect it would have gone well for my friend.

A word to the wise, in Thailand expect the unexpected... it's a jungle out there, literally.

It's quite easy to avoid these people. For a start, stay away from bar girls. Some may be ok, but the areas they work in attract some very bad people. Avoid these areas and you will avoid most of the bad people. It really is that simple. Go hang around a prostitution area in any major city and you will have plenty of bad people. Some people here don't seem to realise this.

And still people want to visit Pattaya?

Surprisingly [to some], in much of Pattaya, people are sober, quite well behaved and mind their own business.

People still want to visit New York, San Francisco, Moscow, Sydney ... and, assuming they don't spend their time drunk in seedy bars, most never experience such things even though senseless violence happens in those places too.

Wherever you are, whoever you are ... including presidents and Popes ... a deranged person may get you, but there are definitely places where you improve the chances of it happening.

Had you said: "And still people want to visit seedy bars populated by dubious drunks and try to chat up their girl friends while playing with their dogs at 1:40 in the morning," I think your it would have been a better question ... but that may just be me.

can you name any city in the world where there are no senceless murders?

There are plenty of towns around the world where there are no murders at all. Would take too long to name them all.

I think you mean presently no murders recorded.

Not such a stupid thing to say. Don't know if it applies in this case, but a responsible bartender will not serve someone who is obviously over intoxicated.

In the west the bar can be held legally responsible if found to be negligent.

Maybe that's why many people come to live here! Every body in the West seems to know what is best for us. I was brought up to be responsible for my actions, it seems now we (the West) want others to make those decissions for us now. Not for me thanks.

I'm half swedish and know that murder is a rare occurrence in sweden, but drunkenness and depression are not. I am thinking he was not of sound mind and there were circumstances which we will find out in due course. His girlfriend looks dodgy as hell though.

I take your point on board but the distinction here is fairly blurry - When you pick up a girl in a club, ie dancing with a bunch of people, start grooving on one particular girl, she ends up going home with you, no money has changed hand, no bar fine paid, is she a "bar" girl or not? Not always easy to tell here... but again, accept what you are saying, if the club happens to be in.... errr... Thailand, chances are she's probably a working girl!

Part of the reason I live here is to avoid people like this. When you hear stuff like this, it really saddens you.

That person stabbed in the neck could have been anyone.

RIP.

This sort of thing doesn't only happen in Thailand, there are looneys in every country, despite some of the things that happen here, I still think Thailand is one of the safest countries in the world to live.

There are always folks that want defend their life choices by arguing that the level of crime, corruption and dishonesty is the same in Thailand as every other country, regardless of what the numbers say. According to intentional homicide statistics, Thailand is more dangerous than every developed country by far except the US, which is still safer than Thailand:
