Lite Beer
PHUKET Tiger Pub declared unsafe; new rules to be enforced on island Photo : Yongyoth Phruksarak PHUKET: -- The controversial Tiger Pub and Discotheque in southern resort island of Phuket will have to be partially demolished following the fire on August 17, which killed four people and injured many others. A team comprising the Phuket governor, an architect, a building inspector, a civil engineer and a provincial electricity official inspected the scene on Monday and found that most of the steel bars on the second floor had been badly damaged by the heat. The pub is 15 years old. Phuket Governor Tri Akkaradecha, said entertainment venues were inspected nightly to ensure safety and check that operators abided by the law on operating hours, drugs and arms possession. As Phuket is a world famous tourist attraction, authorities have been instructed to strictly enforce the law on construction and renovation of buildings, the governor said. Police said an initial inspection found that the building was fitted with required emergency exits, extinguishers and exit signs. The pub was built before the law on fire-resistant construction materials was enforced, police said. About 20 per cent of the construction materials in the building were not resistant to fire. -- The Nation 2012-08-
TheWalkingMan
That horse has left the barn, went to the river, drank its fill and then went on holiday to Monte Carlo. I know some people frown on regulations in Thailand, but the basic safety of having fire suppression systems, using proper construction materials and having real teeth in ordinances should be something everyone can get behind.

marstons
bit like after the full moon boat accidents that kill people, inspections last a few days then coruption as usual. All it needs is Embassy's to issue stong advisory's about travel to thailand until they get there act together. Lucifers in Pattaya has no fire exit and US navy are not permitted to go in on visits. However tourists in every night risking this sort of tradgedy.
KED
It is sad that he loss of life is not more valuable than the lure of corrupt baht. Don't they recognize that these continued failures of Thai infrastructure will slowly undermine the tourist business they claim to want to attract. Nightclub fires and fatalities , highway accidents and deaths, unchecked criminal poisonings and mugging murders, hotel guests dying of undetermined causes - on single incident will not affect tourism but when potential tourists begin researching Thailand and all of these deaths are found - people will begin to avoid visiting. No amount of smiles, cheap food and beer, and beaches is worth a life.

jocko
Let's see, 2012 - 2001 = Hmmmmmm my calculator doesn't say 15.. maybe it's broke.. If they get away with this BS .i give up you would think that they would have learn from the past disaster's that have happened in the L O S to take some notice and try and enforce the laws that have been passed instead of only worrying about the tourist industry and the money they make from them. Most of the people who put input to forums like this are at the end of the day are trying to make Thailand a better place. The whole of Patong know theTtiger complex makes it own rules on saying that ALL the venue's closing at 2am is not a good idea most people have a good time and dont cause any trouble so if you need some venue's open all night change the law then it's a level playing field for all and it would be less corrupt than it is now. I live in hope but-------
