The minimum wage thingy was just Thaksin's populist election promise in order to get the sister in place and pave the way for his return. I'm surprised it actually got partially implemented, but not surprised at all if not enforced. TiT.

The 300 Baht minimum wage has not been implemented nationwide yet.

How do you know what wages Lotus and 7-11 stores are paying in every province? Has there been a survey? What is your source?

I've talked to employees of Lotus in 17 provinces which have told me they pay a starting salary of around 6-7,000 baht a month working 6 days a week at 8 hours a day these HUGE corporations should have the money to pay a meager 7,600 baht a month minimun for those working 48 hours a week! The LOCAL merchants have an excuse for the lakc of funding in wages for employees. But the monopolies of Lotus and 7-11 whose franchise owners usually make over 10,000 baht per day per store is disgusting how they exploit employees, I wouldnt be shocked if some of you on TV were in the slimebag business here...

Depending on your province. 6000 Baht is a decent wage by Thai standards.

I would change decent to acceptable but yes this is about the going rate for a non skilled job - way too much if you ask me!

The OP appears to have missed the fact, that only 7 provinces yet been awarded the 300B/day minimum-wage, and is then surprised to find most other provinces paying less ?

There have been threads/posts on TV recently, decrying the situation and unfairness of it all, but it was only a PTP 'pre-election promise', and the voters are finding-out that once elected, the politicians don't give a rat's ar*e for keeping their word.

How is this the fault of foreign companies who are merely trying to run a business here ?

I don't doubt that farang posters on this farang-site do often own shares in these companies, directly or via their pension-funds, but that doesn't make us slimebags. The exploitation, if there is any, is by Thais & of Thais.

How do you think they became monopolies? You are preaching to the choir, but really, did you think the wage hike was for real??? Just a political ploy. People making min. wage and under just don't matter in this country, however, ire will always be directed at foreigners, not the rich thais who exploit the poor.

Your remind of the type that buys a house next to an airport and complains about the noise. What kind of biz are you into anyways? Do enlighten the slimebags on here.

Yeah, basically it's slave labor. My Thai boyfriend works (outside of BKK,) for a department store and they pay him 200 baht/day and he works 11 hours a day, 6 days a week. What provinces have the 300 baht/day wage now? Obviously, the province we're living in doesn't have it....THIS is why our goal is to go back to my home (America) so we can save money.

Not trying to be contrary but, what are his plans for working in America? Min. wage there is certainly not livable (hope you make enough to support your family)

I have been to many department stores here and if you want to call what those people do there "work," I would beg to differ.

If he has the language skills to work at a dept. store in the US he will be expected to work, to know the merchandise, and to politely and professionally engage customers.

Not saying he doesn't have the minerals to succeed in the US, but something to think about.

I would really like to see every unskilled laborer earning the 300 Bht nationwide. BUT: Wage increases can be justified only be increased PRODUCTIVITY. If not, it's only fuel for higher inflation.

If I look at "productivity" at the 7/11 stores, it has not increased in the last 10 years (at the cash-register you still wait 3 to 4 times longer than at a comparable store in Europe.) And this not only at the 7/11 ens !

So without a countable increase of productivity but still implemented natoinwide by next April, Thailand runs the risk of being "outpriced" as far as labor cost is concerned. Adjacent countries like Cambodia, Laos and Myanmar my be the beneficiaries in the end and not the unskilled laboreres in Thailand.

Cheers.

OP might like to also remember there are different levels of risk in this scenario.

The original 7/11 franchsie holder (CP) or a sub let local franchise owner (there are some sub let from CP), take a risk.

They could select the wrong location. An act of god disaster may mean they have no customers for a month, etc etc. New competition may suddenly render their business ineffective, with customer all going to a shop which opens in a more convenient location, etc.

The franchise holder takes the risk of losing their initial cash investment, at least half a millon Baht for the very small shops, and in most cases several million Baht investment.

Do they get any guarantee of ANY return for their investment? NO!

Is anybody going to reimburse their cash loss if the business fails, even if it's not their fault? NO!

It's basic logic, the franchise holder invested the funds to get it started with no guarantee of any return / they take the risk.

If it's successsful they go home with more.

Do employees (in most cases) lose investment funds if the business fails? NO!

And when they see a better opportunity, higher wages / better benefits etc, will they stay for lower wages? NO!

If staff can see the business is not going well, they have the option to look around and quite possibly make a smooth transition from one job to another with no loss overall in income.

I'm not suggesting, never, that employees should be low paid, but business realities and risk are part of this picture.

Who cares if minimum wage increases, manage fewer employees better and thrive. Too many businesses in Thailand with employees who only work for what theyre paid. or worth.

Just a point of clarification – CP All owns and runs 7-11 in Thailand.

Currently holds the national 7/11 franchise you mean.

Yes, that’s what I meant.

The OP must be some sort of farang Robin Hood.

One question OP, does a farang Robin Hood in Thailand still ride around on a horse ? or have you gone even more native and got your self a buffalo to ride around whilst saving the poor
