matsky13 Posted September 4, 2012 Posted September 4, 2012 Hi, got a few questions , I have just made a school boy error in booking a flight to thailand without even thinking about the vissa problems i may now have !! I am hoping to marry in Thailand in december and just booked flights with a return date 73 days after entry at Bangkok . didnt cross my mind about visa being 60 days . and as i will be going back toThailand in march again I now may have less options with my second visit . But could i come in on a single entry 60 day and extend at a local office for 14 days ?? if so will this cause any problems in later months or years .?? I want to do everything by the book . I dont want any excuse for refused visa apps in the future !!!! hopefully this would leave me with the possibility of getting a new visa in march with a double entry giving me the option of staying for 120 days with a land border visa run at 60 days ?? I am unsure of married or fiance visa requirements and entitlements , so hopefully you guys an help me out here ? Thanks for reading !

matsky13 Posted September 4, 2012 Author Posted September 4, 2012 can i apply for farang married mans visa while in the country , and where ?
Maestro Posted September 4, 2012 Posted September 4, 2012 Let's look at it step by step and everything by the book. Step 1. Marriage You have a ticket to arrive in Thailand in December, marry, and leave Thailand 73 days later to return home. For this, you get a single-entry tourist visa from a Thai consulate in your home country and when you are in Thailand you get a 30-day extension of stay from the nearest immigration office. Step 2. Extension of stay for the reason of living in Thailand with your Thai wife (marriage extension) This is useful if you want to live in Thailand long term without having to leave the country every 90 days. For your next trip to Thailand after your marriage you get a single-entry non-immigrant visa category O for the purpose of visiting your Thai wife (non-O visa). On arrival in Thailand you get permission to stay for 90 days. During the last 30 days you apply at your local immigration office for the one-year extension of stay. Part of the requirements is 400k Baht in a Thai bank account for at least 2 months before your application or evidence of average monthly income of at least 40,000 Baht. If you plan to make several trips per year to visit your wife, with each stay maximum 90 days, you don't need the one-year extension of stay and instead get from a Thai consulate a multiple-entry non-O visa. This will allow you to make an unlimited number of trips to Thailand within one year from the visa's issue date. 1
Lite Beer Posted September 5, 2012 Posted September 5, 2012 (6) In case of marriage with a Thai lady, the husband who is an alien must have an average annual income of not less than 40,000 baht per month or a money deposit in a local Thai bank of not less than 400,000 baht for the past 2 months for expenses within a year. Letter from your Thai Bank showing balance and up to date bank book. OR. Letter from your Embassy showing income. Now may also need proof of income as back up. Marriage Certificate Marriage Registry entry. Wife's Tabbien Baan and ID Card. Your Passport. Copies of everything. Photos of you and your Wife in and around the house. A map showing the way to your house. Passport size photos and 1,900 Baht fee. Take your Wife to be interviewed. One or two witnesses may be required. You will be given a 30 day under consideration stamp. Go back in a month and get the remainder.
PattayaPhom Posted September 5, 2012 Posted September 5, 2012 The marriage needs to be a legal marriage at the Amphur, glitzy weddings in the boonies wont be issued a marriage certificate. So do both if you need to.
lopburi3 Posted September 5, 2012 Posted September 5, 2012 But indeed you can have the marriage certificate issued at such a gathering by making arrangements and officially paying official to attend and present there.

Thats great , I was worried I would need to change my flights for a moment , Just panicking a bit , got so much flying around my tiny brain . Lots to think about ,new financial requirements for wife to be for uk visa , babay on the way , wedding to sort , so , thai visa requirements for Thailand went out of my head as i rushed to book a cheap flight ! but as usual TV to the rescue Thanks Meastro , lite beer , and others , There are some advantages to married life !!, now thats a pleasant a suprise , most of the married men i talk to take a large intake of breath through clenched teeth ,on hearing my current predicament . LOL... I will be " entitled" to 90 days on a non megrant O visa 's again . I had one before on an education visa , but they had stopped allowing that last year ,and had to get 60 day muli. think the Non O 90 day multi will be fine for me ,its unlikely i will be staying in thailand full time at the moment ,and a quick border run ,would get me another 90 days , will be fine for the next 12 months i think ??. but nice to know another more permanent option is available . afew questions ? Q1 On the married 12 month extension route , what is the legal position regarding having 400k bht thas £8k ??? in Thai bank ,how safe is it ??. ie change of government or change of Monarch or bank going the way of some of the iceland banks the other year , ( i got caught up with that one already ) . and whats the average interest rate in thailand also tax implications ??. Q2 Seems a lot of hassle ,as apposed to 4 border runs every year , unless i am missing some other bennefit of 12 month extention ......with i guess a day every year sorting that lot out ? Q3 Also how worried are you guys about the changes of all imigration rules , as time passes ???? Ps will start another post re Weddings , lots to know about there , what a can of worms !!
Mario2008 Posted September 5, 2012 Posted September 5, 2012 Q1. There is a (limited) guarentee against a bank going broke, in which case you will get money from a fund. Just like in many Western countries. Q2. If you work in Thailand, extensions will open up the way to apply for permenant residency or even apply for Thai nationality. Q3. Not that worried, changes are made and amoounts adjusted. But often old cases are grandfathered, but one cannot predict the future. 1
Lite Beer Posted September 5, 2012 Posted September 5, 2012 An Off Topic Post has been removed. Please ask about Visas to UK here. http://www.thaivisa.com/forum/forum/25-visas-and-migration-to-other-countries/
lopburi3 Posted September 5, 2012 Posted September 5, 2012 Q3. Not that worried, changes are made and amoounts adjusted. But often old cases are grandfathered, but one cannot predict the future. But makes Q2 question on extension advantage more important as you will not be grandfathered if not already using.

Re the Banks ,once married is everything above board and legal to hold a bank account in thailand . the limited liabilaty , does it apply to non residents. I am pretty sure the uk FSA regulations are only aplicable to UK residents ??. £8k is a lot of money to wave goodbye to ??
lopburi3 Posted September 5, 2012 Posted September 5, 2012 You do not have to be married to legally hold a bank account in Thailand. But you have the choice to obtain non immigrant O-A visas in home country every two years and never have to move money out of the UK if that is what you want.
matsky13 Posted September 5, 2012 Author Posted September 5, 2012 I had overlooked the fact that you cannot apply for O visa while in Thailand ,so this is an Obvious advantage to doing 12 month extensions . I am not against having money in Thai Bank , but just think its prudent to look into how safe it is and the legaltiy , Thats why i use this Forum Its to ask people who have been there and done it . and to ask your Opinions I hope I am not coming accross as Anti Thai Banks. Recent years have shown that no matter how big the Bank nothing is totaly safe , so best be a little cautious. I will search more of the forum for Having a Bank account in Thailand . Thanks again to All of you ,for very good Information .
lopburi3 Posted September 5, 2012 Posted September 5, 2012 You can apply for a non immigrant O visa entry inside Thailand during a conversion to extension of stay - it is an extra 2,000 baht step but allows a new 90 day entry from application so can be used to season money if required for the actual extension of stay.
TommoPhysicist Posted September 5, 2012 Posted September 5, 2012 Bangkok Bank 5 month deposit account pays 3.25% interest of which 15% is withheld for tax (so about 3% net). I use that for my marriage Visa extension money. Don't worry about the Visa, you can come here on any or no Visa then jump straight into the marriage extensions without leaving the country. (As long as you get legally married before you have to leave). You just call in at any immigration office with wife and marriage certificate, and ask what they can do for you. Most it will cost is 1,900bht x2 (change to non-O for 3 months, then extension to marriage for 1 year). As for bank safety, good for a maximum of 1 million baht in each bank IMHO.
ubonjoe Posted September 6, 2012 Posted September 6, 2012 It would really be a big rush to get married and then get a change of visa status on a 30 day visa exempt entry. A single entry tourist visa would be the best option.
