Hi

Travelling to the UK with the GF in April and thinking of flying KLM. This means changing planes in Amsterdam, at Schiphol.

Am I right in assuming that, since we will not be leaving the airport but are merely changing planes (2 - 3 hour connection), she will not require a transit visa in either direction? She is Thai and has a UK tourist visa. I am a UK citizen.

Anyone have any definitive information on this question (not just opinions)? The information that I have gleaned from the web is confusing, as is the info. on the Netherlands BKK Embassy site. I have e-mailed them so possibly some enlightenment may come from that direction. I'll e-mail KLM as well and see what they say.

Schiphol, like all major EU airports, has a non-Schengen and a Schengen area...the Schengen area pretty much allows you to walk right out, but you can do the transit in the non-Schengen area and she won't need a visa.

My GF does this often with KLM via Amsterdam to Manchester,No transit visa is required and the immigration process in Manchester is miles quicker than Heathrow

Thanks for this info guys.

I thought that, logically, this should be the case but it's nice to be sure. We'll be flying to Newcastle where, hopefully, the immigration process should be even quicker. I'm told that LHR is the worst in this respect.

Duan, how does your GF rate KLM as an airline? I hear mixed reports but they seem to be substantially cheaper than anyone else right now, although Air France comes pretty close.

If you are not exiting the airport and stay within the confines you do not need a transit visa.

I regulary go to Humberside via Schiphol and find it easy and convenient.

There,s plenty to keep you occupied and there are plenty monitors everywhere to inform and update

flight details.

Just make sure your leaving enough time to get to your next check in point and allow for security ect.

There are comfortable resting areas at these locations so you can book in earlier if you want and toilets also.

I always find the check in desk when i land to my on going destination as it is a very large airport

with lots of building work in progress, first.

After that relax and move around the place

I usually check in about 3/4 of an hour before the allotted time but maybe you can allow a bit more for your Thai girlfriend to be cleared.

2 hours will fly by, no problem.

good luck and sorry if this information is duplicated by others.

She likes KLM but a tall guy would have problems with leg room as the seat pitch is 31" against 34" on Thai. The crew are usually very good but the food and entertainment somewhat limited The main reasons she goes KLM is reliability, the easy transfer and the journey time which is a lot quicker than via Heathrow. KLM also make an announcement in Thai prior to landing which I presume deals with transfer information and Schipol is a very easy airport to transfer through.

KLM are owned by Air France.
