I have been in Chiang Mai for years now and want to expand the expat group I hang out with.

B/ground - Asian, hospitality professional ; well traveled in all regions except South America and Africa. Cultural and respectful.

Looking for any expats male or female of any age range who share any or all of the following same interests to meet up and strike friendships :

- Hotels Trade and Food ! I am not a Cheap Charlie or a hi-so ...I like good tasting food at reasonable prices and the venue matters to me for enjoyment ...the key word is value for money.

- business professional who are into investments and have worked in Asia before and like to trade stories and experiences

- People who enjoy the traveling and the travel trade and like to talk about their experiences

- Train ride junkies, Vespa fans, Manchester United Football Club members and people who love dogs and Indochina

I have lived in Laos, Vietnam and Cambodia before and call Chiang Mai home as I like the balance of west and east ! I travel 8 months on the job and stay the remaining 4 in Chiang Mao for vacation and a balance of life

Not keen to meet any negative, grouchy or pessimistic people ...so u don't have to post your negative thoughts too ...

Thanks looking forward to meeting all !

Where to begin . . . .

It seems to me the Expat group is a mixed bag here in Thailand. With different backgrounds, home lands, and cultures as well as reasons for being here.just the tip of the iceberg . . .

Seems the Core of my friends, much like yourself come and go durring the year. Some for work, some snow birds as we say chasing the good weather. Here durring the winter back home.

Though some of my friends have some like interest, some do not have much in common except a love for Thailand.or a dispise for things now back home.

However I can have my negative, grouchy or pessimistic days

I have found it easier finding friends living here full time and not like when I came and went as I did prior. I also have many friend who are Thai and living as the only expat in a all Thai Moo Baan has taught me many things too and has given me as well as earned me respect of and from Thais

Younger friends do make me feel younger, but some others inspire me to think and see things other ways

My mother gave me good advice once (ok more than once, not that I always listened)

"to get a good friend, be a good friend"

Best wishes and luck to you in all your endevers

Thanks Jeffrey ! Glad to have found a friend like you...many more like you will be great and add a group dynamics that each can learn from ...not that the Vespa next year will change much

I respect and admire the way you set yourself up here ...it's a great way to enjoy the country & city and be among the Thais

Looking forward to next week meeting !

Heya Moe

Buying in jan when I am back again as I am off to work in about 2 weeks .....

Do u have one as well ?

Lawrence

No I have a PCX 150 the price of the Vespa put me off and there are lots of Honda Dealers around to repair the PCX. I also ride mine on the highway as well doing a bit of touring. If you are interested we can do a ride to Lampun along the river when you get yours or a rental. PM me when you get back to CM

Thanks Moe

Jeffrey recommended the PCX to me as well as he rides.

We saw both the PCX and Vespa...I agree the price is a put off for the Vespa but the flat front makes it easier for grocery shopping or balancing 4 pallets of water as Jeffrey is asking me to do :-p

Will pm you when I get back have fun riding !

I like the PCX because of a more motorcycle type ride also I am over 6 feet tall so the Vespa is a bit small for me in its handlebar lay out. I just put some of the shopping in the storage under seat and hange off the handle bars so far no problem. What ever you decide on will be fun no matter what others ride.

Map guy ...kkkk u don't get it mate..have a fun day with yourself !

Sorry! Apparently, a sense of humor is not a characteristic sought!

Anyway, Interesting way to expand the use of the web site. I do recall various "where can I meet people" sorts of requests from time to time over the years, but posting a personal profile seems new.

Agreed it is a new way. That being said I was wondering if he considers just trading information back and forth over the internet as a friendship. To me I use the internet to communicate with friends who are not here in Chiang Mai. If they are in Thailand I will call them up and I have been known to call North America long distance.

Being old I can remember when it cost almost 7 baht a minute to make a phone call from one location in Seattle to another one a few miles out of the city. Lately it is looking like friendship consists of electronics communication. Even on the phone rather than talk to a person they will send a tech message.

As for friends having to have the same likes as I do well that can be pretty close minded. I have friends I have no interest in a lot of what they do. And they have no interest in what I do yet we have found common ground.

Be careful out there folks.

Plenty of warnings out there re meeting people over the internet, go google it before meeting strangers.

Protect yourself from privacy issues, identity theft, impostors, villains, attacks, kidnappings, molestations, drugged drinks and clingons.

Thanks for all the postings

The reason why I network with people with the same interests ...its an easier start for friendships in a city where u don't know everyone and it has worked well for me as I strike friendships around the world

We start with something similar and then as diverse as it gets it makes life interesting ...I agree friends don't have to see eye to eye on everything

I agree with Hellodolly that nothing is better than that personal touch an communication and in my line of business a handshake, a personal meeting is more powerful than an email. As I am a tech adopter, I also see it as advantage to use technology to expand the groups of people to meet around the world

I am not looking for any business contacts as I came here to rest, but like minded business professionals can always share a different perspective to the works as I enjoy the mental stimulation from sharing experiences on occasions.

As for why I am asking for expats only, the only reason is I never have difficulty meeting Thais here in Chiang Mai as they are all generally friendly , less suspicious and willing to meet up. So I already have a good group of Thai friends here who keeps recommending more friends to meet

Thanks for all the pms and looking forward to meeting those who responded.

Attend a Skal meeting, they are the last Thursday of the month usually. It is a very large and varied group of travel and tourism professionals. You are sure to make some new friends there.

Good company and good food at lunch would be wonderful. If that is what you are looking for I would be interested.

Hey Lawrence,

I'll be in Chiangmai around 21 Dec. will you be around then?

I have been planning to retire to Northern Thailand for years. The spouse is still working so I cannot make the big move yet. So whenever I can, I hang out in CM staying with Thai friends....and meeting up with expat buddies. It would be nice to have another expat contact in Chiang Mai.

Not trying to be a smart ass but I was wondering if you were looking for friends or acquaintances?

I know a lot of people who know a lot of people who claim they have a lot of friends who in reality are just people they have met and very rarely shared experiences with such as going on a day tour or bowling etc.

I can honesty say for myself I only have three friends but I know and interact with a lot of other people. I consider them acquaintances. Some of them I do not even like.

Blood test ?! rolleyes.gif

are you suggesting he is gay, or has a sexual agenda?

I’m not sure.

The requirements and qualifications the OP is suggesting that are needed to become his friend, sounds more like someone who is seeking a relationship, or more likely looking for people to be part of a business venture rather than just meeting people to hang about with socially. This appears to be some sort of job interview.

To be quite honest, I’ve never heard of anything like this before, just seems a bit strange.

I mix and socialise with people from all walks of life, and certainly don`t ask for references or give them a compatibility test, right down to what sorts of motorbikes they use, to see if they professionally match my requirements before having a night out on the town with them.

So over to you OP. What exactly are you seeking and your intentions?
