GHAZNI CITY, AFGHANISTAN (BNO NEWS) -- Over 50 people were killed after a passenger bus crashed with an oil tanker in southern Afghanistan on Friday, local authorities said Saturday.

The passenger bus operated by the Ahmad Shah Abdali Transport Service collided head-on with the fuel tanker on the Kabul-Kandahar highway at around 9 a.m. local time in the Aab Band district in the province of Ghazni.

Provincial police chief Colonel Zarawar Zahid told Pajhwok Afghan News that 51 passengers were killed in addition to the bus driver and cleaner. Five others were also reported injured and in critical condition.

Meanwhile, senior traffic officer Mohammadullah Ahmadi blamed the accident to reckless driving on behalf of the bus driver.

Reports indicate that most of victims died after the tanker caught fire. The injured were transported to the Ghazni Civil Hospital, but no further details were immediately available.
