Police officers gather near the Democrat Party

City cops take time off work to back chief, who fails to show at party's HQ

BANGKOK: -- Several hundred Democrat supporters clashed with police outside the party's headquarters yesterday as Metropolitan Police chief Pol Lt-General Kamronwit Thoopkrajang cancelled a visit to the office, where he had planned to file a complaint.

Kamronwit sent his subordinate, Maj-Gen Chaiwat Chantaworalak, to submit the letter. But Chaiwat was roundly booed by Democrat supporters, forcing him to cross the street while waiting for his vehicle.

On Monday, Kamronwit told the media he would visit Democrat headquarters at 11am yesterday to submit a letter asking the party to cease their attacks on him. The Democrats have targeted the city police chief for allowing former PM Thaksin Shinawatra - a fugitive from justice - to decorate him with insignia after his promotion as police chief. Kamronwit said he admired and respected Thaksin and that their relationship has nothing to do with his job as a police officer.

About 200 police went to the party's headquarters to show solidarity with Kamronwit, though they were not officially deployed.

Pol Sub-Lieutenant Somkid Sawangnil from the Metropolitan Police Bureau said he and his group came in support of Kamronwit, not as part of their duties. He said police today were persecuted by politicians, adding that he wanted to stand up for the dignity of police. Kamronwit's loyalty to Thaksin was admirable and had nothing to do with politics, he said.

Somkid admitted he made the visit during his working hours, but said he intended to spend only a short time there.

Pol Lt-Col Chumpol Kananurak of Phaya Thai station and 200 other police officers were on hand to secure the scene in case of a violent confrontation. He later told the protesting officers to disperse after learning of Kamronwit's cancellation.

Trang MP Satit Wongnongtaey told supporters at Democrat office the dispute had its origins in a malfeasance case filed by party lawyer Rames Rattanachaweng against Kamronwit for failing to arrest Thaksin during a meeting between the two men, and proudly displaying in his office a picture of the fugitive former PM decorating Kamronwit's uniform with the insignia of Metropolitan Police chief.

"If Kamronwit comes here, I'd like to ask him this: 'From now on, to whom can the people turn for help?'" Satit said, adding the police chief would do well to remember his salary is paid by taxpayers.

Democrat supporters jeered and tried to surround red-shirts who drove or walked past the area. They shouted that police were causing difficulties for people by organising a mob of their own. However, other Democrats stepped in to hush vocal protesters, fearing violence would erupt.

The rally of party supporters was intended in part to coincide with the Senate's vote on whether to impeach veteran Democrat Suthep Thaugsuban. A cheer went up from the assembled party faithful when news arrived that he had survived impeachment.

Chairman of the House panel on police affairs, Trang MP Somchai Losatapornpipit, said the committee was ready to receive a complaint from Democrat MPs about Kamronwit's behaviour. It is due to be submitted today.

Yellow bellied red shirt police show up with their guns to intimidate the democrats, how lovely. Perhaps the military should show up at the police chiefs office with a few bazookas.

the same as the outgoing National Police Chief being Thaksin's brother-in-law had nothing to do with his job as a police officer.

yep, nothing wrong at all with the country's top cop getting his promotion and assignment from a convicted fugitive on the run...

The blatant disparities relating to this governments bias towards their red shirt supporters ect. ect. is publicised very clearly indeed not only for Thai, but for the rest of democracy around the world.

The police have also made a profound statement as to were and to who their loyalties lie.

Can you imagine had it been one of the many protests the reds have and will make in the future, the goverment /authorities reacting likewise.

Ditto Chalerm openly condemning them and taking the called for steps to stop them continuing their disruptive actions and all things related to their main objective and singular cause.

Never going to happen is it ?????

At least the police did not open fire on the civilians. whistling.gif

Nor would they unless the protesters started firing at them. Hurling boos and insults is so terribly provocative though.

No, only at many innocents during the war on drugs & I think there actions caused some deaths during the the yellow shirt protests but we never hear about this nowadays. If they had done their job & dispersed the red protests earlier then perhaps there may not have been any deaths. Apart from being pro red I suspect the police at the time could see the writing on the wall.

These guys were being paid to be on duty yet they neglected that to go & intimidate the Democrat protesters.

"Pol Sub-Lieutenant Somkid Sawangnil from the Metropolitan Police Bureau said ... he wanted to stand up for the dignity of police."

Can someone please explain to me how corruption and incompetence equate to dignity?

House Committee asked to probe Police Chief's anti-Dem rally

Democrat MP Satit Pitutecha Wednesday submitted a letter to Somchai Losathaphonphiphit, Chairman of the House Committee on Police Affairs, requesting investigation into Metropolitan Police Chief Police Lt-General Kamronwit Thoopkrajang for mobilising a police rally outside the Democrat Party's headquarters on Tuesday.

Satit said Kamronwit's behavior broke both regulations and morality after he sent out a message pressuring police officers to go to the Party’s headquarters to show solidarity with Kamronwit on Tuesday.

Kamronwit earlier said he would tell the Democrats to stop attacking him for supporting former premier Thaksin Shinawatra. He said police officers who agreed with him could join him at the protest.

Correct. It was the red shirts opening fire on the police and army:

-the firing of an M79 into the 11th Infantry Regiment on January 28, 2010;

-the firing of grenades during the incidents at Kok Wua intersection on April 10, 2010, which caused 5 deaths of soldiers (including that of Col Romklao);

-the firing into the oil depot at Prathum Thani on April 21, 2010;

-the firing of an M79 into the BTS station at Sala-Daeng on April 22, 2010, which caused 2 deaths and 78 injuries;

- the firing of an M16 on police officers and soldiers in front of the Krung Thai Bank, Sala-Daeng Branch, on May 7, 2010, which caused 1 death and 2 injuries of policemen;

- the firing into the UCL building on May 14, 2010, causing 1 deaths and 4 injuries of police officers (see Thairath).

-the firing of an RPG into Dusit-Thani Hotel on May 17, 2010

-the firing attack into the police flat at Lumpini Police Station on May 19, 2010, causing deaths and injuries of police officers and their families;

And your proof of the redshirts being responsible is what?

Your posts are getting more meaningless as time goes by. Pretty bad when that is all you can say for the present government.

Actually they were doing the ame thing they did when their buddies took over doown town Bangkok. NOTHINGcheesy.gif but they are good at that.cheesy.gif

You failed to mention they were supposed to be at work. If they had not shown up the letter could in all probability been delivered no big deal.clap2.gif

All those who lived in Bangkok in those days know what the red shirts did. They either saw the violent acts with their own eyes or saw them on the news.

There were a few more events but a lot of them didn't get into the press. My office is in Sala Daeng.

Remember the reds firing fireworks in the air at the time of the grenade attacks ? Coincidence that they were letting off fireworks with a bang the same time someone was lobbing grenades onto the BTS....
