Lots Of Visa Questions

Featured Replies

Hello everyone and thanks in advance for any replies,

I am a US citizen who is going to Mermaids Dive School in Pattaya/Jomtien on Oct 2 2012 for 7months. This will be my first time living abroad. I received word from the Thai Embassy in Washington D.C. today that my application for a one year multiple entry visa was rejected (at a cost of $200 nonrefundable)(plus $65 and change to FedEx for shipping both ways). I applied for the one year visa because it was the recommened way to go according to Mermaids. The Thai Embassy said I must resubmit an application for a single entry 3 month non immigrant visa at a cost of $80 (plus FedEx charges). This expensive visa hassle doesn't really surprise me but does leave me wondering what other kind of visa expenses there will be over the next seven months.

My list of Questions

1. Does having a one year multiple entry visa still require a border/visa run every 90 days? Why?

2. Mermaids has said they use visa run service at a cost of $2000bht. Are there addition fees for the passport stamp, bribes, etc.?

3. Mermaids also indicates different types of visa's use different border crossings. Is this true? Why?

4. The Thai Embassy in D.C. said "you have to apply for single entry if you have to stay longer than that you have to extend in Bangkok" (that is a quote). Is this true? Why would there be a need for a border run?

I understand that I am a complete "coconut" when it comes to living abroad. I also understand that being a "coconut" means you pay more because you don't know how things work (I do this to coconuts at the poker table). Aside from learning from experience (usually bad) are there other expenses that I'm not aware of until someone has their hand out?

Many Thanks

Alan Gamble

1. All visas allow 90 day stay only. A multi entry would allow you to do for a period of one year of up to 90 days. This is what most business travelers would require as it is not designed for you to stay in Thailand. For education it allows start and then extensions of stay.

2. You would require a multi entry visa to use this system - or you will have to go every 15 days as without visa that is all you will get on visa exempt entry.

3. No valid reason for most nationalities.

4. Unless school is a certified educational facility (and it appears they are not if they said obtain multi entry visa) you will not be able to extend your stay. If you did there would not be any need for border runs.

It would appear you might be better served by obtaining a 3 entry tourist visa which provides 60 day stays that can each be extended 30 days before a border run is required for the next. But apply to an Honorary Consulate such as Portland. If you do go with the non immigrant visa you will likely have to exit Thailand to obtain new visas once here and that will require overnight stay(s).

Portland has been very friendly in the past and it can be done by mail. A triple entry tourist visa will give you almost 270 days if used properly with two border runs and three 30 day extensions (1900 baht each at immigration in Pattaya). Here's the contact info:

October 2nd is coming fast but you still have time if you do it right away. Good luck!

My list of Questions

1. Does having a one year multiple entry visa still require a border/visa run every 90 days? Why?

Yes, it's a multiple entry non-immigrant visa and grants 90 days of stay at a time

2. Mermaids has said they use visa run service at a cost of $2000bht. Are there addition fees for the passport stamp, bribes, etc.

Visa-runs (only applicable with multi-entry non-immigrant-visa's and visa-exempts) may cost in between THB 1900 and THB 2500.

3. Mermaids also indicates different types of visa's use different border crossings. Is this true?

Maybe that Mermaids has experience with this. Usually it doesn't matter what visa you carry at whatever border-crossing.

4. The Thai Embassy in D.C. said "you have to apply for single entry if you have to stay longer than that you have to extend in Bangkok" (that is a quote). Is this true? Why would there be a need for a border run.

I just guess, that Mermaids gave you the advise to apply for an multiple-entry non-immigrant ED-visa. Just a few countries submit multiple entry non-immigrant ED-visa and usually a single entry 3 month visa is submitted.

For the rest of your stay you depend on Mermaids and their assistance in getting your 90 day-extensions.

Just in general: If Mermaids is so poor on their information, please do not rely on their knowledge on visa-matters. Let them stick to the diving issues.

The general rule is never apply for Visas at Embassies.

Apply at Honorary Consulates, they are a lot more helpful.

Are there any Honorary Consulates in Laos, Cambodia, Malaysia etc, ?

Cheers.

No.

1. All visas allow 90 day stay only. A multi entry would allow you to do for a period of one year of up to 90 days. ....clip......

I know it doesn't apply in the OP's situation, but an O-A "retirement" visa permits a stay of up to 12 months. Just thought the record should be clear.

Correct but technically that is a combination of a non immigrant O visa and a pre-Approved extension of stay "A".

The reference to Honorary Counsulate would be for U.S. / Europe / Australia. In the U.S., Houston and Portland are frequently mentioned - definitely stay away from the main Embassies as they are very strict and less than helpful.

If you are unable to obtain a full one-year visa - then get a double or single entry tourist visa before you arrive. If you can get a double entry then with extensions and one visa run - that will get you almost 6 months. You could then travel to Malaysia, Cambodia, or Laos and apply for a single entry tourist visa - that will give you another 60 days and you can apply within Thailand for an additional 30 days -

You can do a search about visa runs and learn many things from this place. I know I have.

I think the nearest honorary consulate is is in Bali.

There are several scattered around the world not just the countries mentioned in previous post.
