Central Thailand, including capital, braces for heavy rain through Saturday

BANGKOK, Sept 28 – Provinces in Thailand’s central region--including Bangkok--will continue to be battered by heavy rainfalls through tomorrow, according to Royal Chitradon, chairman of the subcommittee on water situation analysis.

He said he had coordinated with government agencies concerned including the Bangkok Metropolitan Administration (BMA), the Royal Thai Navy and the Public Works and Town and Country Planning Department to help with drainage to alleviate flooding.

Mr Royal said the monsoon trough now passing through the Central Plains will maintain its strength and cause heavy rains through Saturday.

In addition to Bangkok municipality preparations, Dr Royal said the Royal Thai Navy has prepared boats to push out water from Klong Ladkrabang, Klong Hua Takae, Klong Bangkhen and Klong Bang Sue.

The Public Works Department has set up 65 pumps in the city's flood-prone areas to pump floodwater from roadways to canals, he said. (MCOT online news)

Heavy, Flash floods and Mudslides expected across the country

BANGKOK, 28 September 2012 (NNT) - Government agencies are warning residents in flood-prone areas across the country to brace for heavy rains and possible flash floods and forest runoffs.

The Meteorological Department has announced that due to a continuously strong monsoon trough covering the lower Central region, the upper South and the East and a southwestern monsoon prevailing over the Andaman Sea, the South and the Gulf of Thailand, extremely heavy rains are expected in many areas.

Strong winds will generate 2-3 meter-high waves in the Andaman Sea and the Gulf of Thailand and all shipping should proceed with caution today and tomorrow.

In Bangkok and its vicinities, widespread thundershowers and isolated torrential rainfall are expected in 90% of the capital.

Meanwhile, the Department of Mineral Resources also urged volunteers of its disaster warning network to closely monitor the situation in risky areas nationwide.

The areas at risk of flash floods and forest runoffs include Mae Hong Son, Chiang Mai, Phitsanulok, Sakaeo, Trat, Ranong and Krabi.

Following bouts of heavy rains in the past few days, some of these low-lying areas have been hit by forest runoffs. Volunteers are being asked to monitor rainfall levels in case of mudslides.

Community leaders and provincial authorities have been put on high alert and are keeping a close watch on the situation.

Fresh water may become scarce in one place at any given time but we cannot say that water will become rarer; to all intents and purposes it is finite but remains a constant, planet-wide.

Not to fear Yingluck has said no more floods. The government has over 3 billion Baht they spent for flood control.

Also the Royal Navy is on the job.

I didn't know King Canute has been resurrected and with the Royal Thai Navy will now turn back the water in Thailand. maybe he will have better luck this time.

Bugger, heading to Bangkok saturday too, hopefully the roads from Surat Thani will be ok. Will be staying in Thonburi for 4 days, hopefully they are just being over cautious.

Yep. I had to drive through it in Nontaburi. I did note that flooding has increased on roads, as more villages are being built (and built on even higher built-up land, in fear of more flooding). Lots of brown muddy water on the road. That's what you get when you develop on the floodplain!

They should have left all of the appearing sink holes open; thems ones that appeared all year between Jan and July.

Sinks drain water, and there's must have beens holes below them that would take away any threat of flooding.

Oh! Sorry - that's the great tunnel they just found below BKK that will ensure no floods, even if there are 10 bad storms.

The gov't said that it would control flooding from the Chao Phraya this year. I would like to see where the government made a flat out statement that there would be no flooding whatsoever during monsoon season. And it is You that are stating that the government ostensibly gives no false information and then you are giving the derisive crack about your own false epithet.
