Dang, where I live (Oregon, USA) walking into a personal residence without permission is called home invasion and carries the death penalty from me - literally. I am allowed to shoot to kill anyone who's in my home without permission. That's not saying I would or have, but legally I could. I also have a concealed firearms license (Yes you Brits, we spell it "license," LOL) and I carry 24/7.

Again, I'm not at all likely to shoot someone but would much more likely tell them to leave and see what they do, but the point is that's how seriously that act is taken here.

I haven't had that happen when I'm in Thailand, but I would feel disrespected and speak accordingly.

Did anyone mention perhaps simply putting a latch on the screen door?

Get a slingshot and snap them between the eyes, they'll learn. Or if you want to go hi-tech, many places sell guns that shoot small plastic balls. Or go all primitive like I do, bare teet, growl and pass faul smelling gas (don't bother wit Geneva rules, TiT).

I'm the organised type and like to buy in bulk and stock up on things but found quickly that obtaining what was needed just in time and stashing thing was prudent.

Are you saying that these people just help themselves to your food stores? If so were they stealing them behind your back, or were they just blatantly taking them as you watched?

I may not be very popular when I retire there next year. That's over the top for me.

Is the license dangerous, that it has to be concealed?

LOL. I had to hit the "like" button on that. :) No, the license is just so ugly that no one wants to see it. :)

given your avatar, i understand why you may not want to get caught out.

i would suggest screen doors that you can latch.

i get caught out quite a bit in my beach house, but i i would not have it any other way. it has led to good things.

i am always curious why people need to say "dang, where i live" or "in my country", or "back home" etc.

fact is, you aren't in kansas, or berlin, or oslo, or manchester

y'all gave up the right to compare, but i reckon if your wife were offended, it would stop happening.

I haven't given up any rights to use my mind. I'll be in Thailand again in a couple of months, planning on retiring there next year. Maybe if I keep hearing enough crap I'll change my mind. I don't have it so bad right here on my hilltop.

again, i ask who really cares?

again, i ask who really cares?

I do. Even though I'm moving to Thailand, my opinion of whether people should enter my home without permission won't change. I'll put locks and latches on everything, but if anyone but a select few who know it's OK just barge into my house they will be driven out and get an earful in the process. I'm not even used to my best friends or family doing that and none of us does.

I've spent my whole life believing that an uninvited intruder in my home is at best rude beyond belief and at worst a threat. I don't see that changing.

And BTW, I don't give a chit whether you care. It's my home. :)

I have no idea what you mean by "photoshopped." That's my home.

No it's a single home with the first floor a daylight basement as you can see from the ground sloping up along the side. Those are garage doors to your right of the entry, and to the left is a window which is my office. Behind that downstairs is a den and bath. Straight ahead of the entry door is a wide staircase which goes up to the main floor where there's a great room, kitchen, laundry, three more bedrooms, two more baths etc. Those rooms were put up there to take advantage of the wonderful view and thus the many windows. The garage is 30 feet deep and 40 feet wide, and that's what I think you're seeing.

Here's a shot of it from Google Earth, and a shot of the stairs going right down to that front door. I don't know if it makes any sense, but it's all one home.

In the last picture the 'photoshopped' bushes aren't there!

I have no idea what you're talking about. The home is about five years old. I completed the 1/2 acre of landscaping over time. I have no idea when google's picture was taken and neither do you. That's a satellite or street shot of unknown origin or time from google earth. I simply typed my address into google earth and chose the street view. I hit prtscn and pasted it into Irvanview and cropped it and posted it.

You are looking at some bushes which are hedge type and freshly trimmed with hedge clippers by the landscaper who planted them as fairly mature plants. I think they are called English Laurel but I'm not sure. I don't remember. Obviously they are newer than google's picture. So what?

Here's a pic during construction and that's my excavator and my Ford 4x4.. No bushes, groundcover or lawn or sprinkler system yet. Can you wrap your head around that?

What's your problem tonight anyway?

Ever heard of air conditioning?, if your door is open they will enter, this is one of things that I LOVE about Thailand, there are no social barriers to stop people from entering ones home, hence why doors and locks were invented.

I don't know enough about that. I've been only a visitor when I've been to LOS. Others on here seem to think it would be showing disrespect. Just for me, there will sure be locks and latches. As they say, you can take the boy out of the country but you can't take the country out of the boy. I could never get used to it.

In the seven years we were in the same condo our door was always open if we were home. Never did anyone enter without calling out except my grandson who was sent in to wake granddad who was crashed on the sofa and failed to hear :)

Same in the house, but only been in 2 months as yet.

not that soft, yet.

Well you're obviously soft enough to let all and sundrie walk all over you and your property. smile.png
