University prep programme kicks off

Supinda Na Mahachai

The Nation on Sunday

Tens of thousands of students across the nation are joining a tutoring programme to prepare for university admissions at four universities in the country's major regions.

Saha Pathanapibul and Nation Multimedia Group, along with Mama, kicked off the event offering tutorial courses to prepare for university examinations, yesterday.

The tutorial sessions began yesterday at the four universities and they will run until Thursday. They are Bangkok University of the Thai Chamber of Commerce (UTCC) in the Central region, Chiang Mai University in the North, Khon Kaen University in the Northeast and Prince of Songkla University in the South.

Some 30 popular tutors will take turns to coach the participants in all the subjects of the Ordinary National Educational Test, General Aptitude Test and Professional Aptitude Test at the four venues. About 60,000 students registered for the tutorial courses at these universities.

In addition, the tutorial courses at UTCC have been broadcast via broadband to 542 schools in 77 provinces, to reach out to more students. In all, about 140,000 students have been tutored, according to Vathit Chokwatana, director of Saha Pathanapibul.

Nation Broadcasting Corporation president Adisak Limprungpatanakij said the number of schools that have received the broadcast increased from 300 last year to 542 this year.

He said that apart from tutoring the subjects for the tests whose scores are used for university central admissions, the tutorial project this year also provided other tutorial courses focusing on the tests for university direct admissions.

The first two venues were Udon Thani and Phitsanulok in September. Three more venues would be added in October - in Ubon Ratchathani, Nakhon Ratchasima and Surat Thani.

Prachinburi rushes to build earthen dikes to keep water from Prachinburi-Simahapote road

PRACHINBURI, 30 September 2012 (NNT) - Ms. Rachanee Senkhao, chairperson of the subdistrict (Tambon) administrative organization of Dong Krathong Yam ordered the digging of earthen dikes to keep out floodwater at the kilometer mark no.15 on the Prachinburi-Simahapote road.

The dike construction came after forest run-off had caused the Prachinburi river to overflow, allowing water to flow over earthen dikes that were 1.50 meters tall for a distance of 300 meters. The road section was submerged under almost 80 centimeter-high water, and became inaccessible to motorcycles and small vehicles.

Three backhoes are being employed to dig an earthen dike that is more than 2 meters wide and over 2 meters tall. The dike under construction will stretch a distance of 600 meters, and will serve as a barrier to prevent floodwater from flowing across the road into Tambon Dong Krathong Yam and nearby subdistricts in the province. The move will also prevent the floodwater from eventually flowing into Chachoengsao province.

Flood prevention dyke at Lat Krabang Industrial Estate repaired

image_20120930112646156D2B0A-A0D0-F42F-2A3C86AC4FDD0208.jpg

BANGKOK, Sept 30 – The flood prevention dyke at the Lat Krabang Industrial Estate was repaired Saturday night as the governor of Industrial Estate Authority of Thailand (IEAT) confirmed flooding was under control.

Flood has receded as workers have pumped flood water out of the industrial estate after a collapsed flood prevention dirt embankment was fixed. Flooding on Saturday forced some factories to suspend operations.

Industrial Estate Authority of Thailand (IEAT) Governor Veerapong Chaiperm said that heavy rain in Bangkok and surrounding areas increased the water level in the canal at the industrial estate and it flowed through a three-metre-wide gap of the industrial estate’s flood prevention dyke.

It caused a flood about 50 centimetres deep but had no impact on the industrial estate’s main road. He said the flooding was triggered by heavy rains and not by northern run-off. (MCOT online news)

Vegetable prices rise due to flood damage; likely to continue to increase due to Vegetarian Festival

BANGKOK, 30 September 2012 (INN) - A survey of fresh vegetables for sale at the Chokchai 4 market has found that, due to the flooding in numerous areas, the prices of vegetables, particularly leafy vegetables, have considerably increased from the previous month's.

The average price increase is 5 to 20 THB per kilogram, though for certain vegetables, the price has doubled. This is a consequence of some of the crops being destroyed by flooding.

The affected vegetables include Chinese cabbage, which was originally sold for 20 THB per kilogram, but can now be purchased for 25 THB per kilogram; lettuce, whose price has risen from 25 THB per kilogram to 60 THB; spring onions, originally priced at 35 THB a kilogram but now sold for 40 THB, and parsley, which has seen an increase from 42 THB per kilogram to 70 THB per kilogram.

Certain vegetables have not been affected, and are sold at their original prices, such as Chinese kale, which costs 30 THB per kilogram.

It has also been found that the majority of are concerned over the prices of vegetables, thanks to the upcoming Vegetarian Festival.

It is believed the prices of vegetables will increase in the middle of next month, due to the increased demands during the festival, and to the flooding, which will likely damage more yields.

Consumers are asking the Ministry of Commerce to keep a close eye on the situation and put measures into place to keep the prices stable.
