Satellite / Cable Tv In Bangkok

Recommended Posts

Hello All,

I'm moving to bangkok next month and had a few questions regarding TV.

1) How is the quality/channel variety of the cable TV in bangkok that is usually available with the renting of a condo?

2) Is it worth investing in a satellite dish with a HDTV? What are the associated costs with having your own dish?

Many thanks for your inputs! Much appreciated.

There must be some legal alternatives to True - had it for many years and it got worse and worse - more than 20 minutes of adverts every hour, same old ones repeated time after time, programs repeated endlessly - they must be saving money by purchasing less and less programing and showing it repeatedly, Granted, we are a minority here in Thailand however really paying a premium price. I would not even mind paying more if they had decent programing and signals not fading out during every rain storm. (No cable service in my area). About the only good thing with True is their customer service department which do try to assist you in spite of their company.

Have seen many observations about internet TV however most of them are described in computer geek language such as 'seed boxes' etc ??? Would be nice if there would be some replies and suggestions in plain English for those of us too dumb to understand computer lingo!

Plus, what about these adverts we get about 3000 channels through your computer? I assume they might be able to be connected to your TV through various cables. Most comments on the forum are from a year ago and it seems there has been a lot of new technology that we might be able to take advantage of; Anyone had any real experience with them or all speculation?

Hey Snooky,

Thanks for your post mate. I'm not clued up either about the seed box you mentioned and internet tv. Wow, but you sure do paint a dismal picture for true visions and here I was signing up with them in the next few days. I've definitely put that on hold, so thank you for that.

Any other satellite tv providers around? or is true a monopoly here? I have Happy cable at the moment which is ok, very limited english channels, thanksfully a few dedicated football channels though.

cheers, here's hoping for some better tv! Hope we get some more posts on here.

Really, what you need to do is evaluate what you have where you choose to live. For me, I have a PVR (Personal video recorder) so I never worry about adverts. This is no different from those in the US who use TIVO. Some friends in Bangkok, instead, rely on downloading off the internet (including my kid).

First see what you have.

@OldManRiver: Thank you very much for the post. Yes, a PVR is what I used at home before I moved here. From the choices I know of in my area till now, I know I have a choice between TrueVisions satellite TV and Happy Cable, the latter of which is what I'm currently using on trial basis for the first month.

Could I ask you please which service provider in Bangkok are you subscribed with? And how much does the PVR service and satellite box etc cost you?

Thanks a ton in advance!

@UKTV: thank you, i will have a look at your website, cheers.
