Is it because all farang go to bars, get drunk and are likely to get into brawls? It sounds like the police are already trying to put some blame on the victim. Why don't they "believe" that the jet-ski mafia stabbed him for refusing to be extorted for "damages" for instance? From my experience on Samui this would be more likely reason for a tourist to be stabbed.

I live on Samui and have done for a number of years You can come to Samui and live a normal life like I and my wife do, keep to yourself and stay out of the bars, unfortunatly some people come and spend all day getting pissed and abusing Thais I have seen it with my own eyes those type of people are asking for trouble, There are Mafia/gangs all over the world like there are drug dealers and trouble makers. It just underlines the fact that the type of argument that you might get involved in back home is, in fact, a threat to your very life here in Thailand.

Get involved in an argument with a Thai bloke, and you can be sure that it will very quickly develop into something other than the original one-on-one. That's when these "men" get dangerous and have no qualms about sticking a knife into you!

Safe is what YOU are and what YOU do...

I've been in all kind of cities from '98 onwards in Asia. Never had any trouble anywhere.

What gets people into trouble?

- Getting drunk in an unknown place alone

- Thinking you're strong enough to start picking a fight (or even argument) with locals

- Going out alone at night without a local friend/guide to keep an eye on you

There will always be the occasional robbery/theft. Wallet-snatchers have been around for 1000's of years, to name one.

But if you, as a tourist/expat/foreigner, take proper care and think about what you're doing or going to do, then 99% of the risk has already been taken care of.

I've seen so many people who think they can do what they want ending up in Hospital or worse, for what? And then complain about Thailand being not safe?

It's those big-mouth know it all's that are equally (if not in majority), responsible for the trouble we see in papers every day.

In part, I'd say it's the change in the type of tourist that now comes to Asia.

With the rise of cheap tickets, you see a different class of people (lower income earners) coming to Thailand and other exotic places.

These people have less experience with traveling, are more gullible to scams and are more likely to argue and get in trouble.

They also have less money to spend, which puts pressure on the tourist-businesses, resulting in a degrading 'customer-service' because they start cutting corners.

The same happened in Europe with the rise of Spain/Italy/Greece/Turkey as top-holiday destinations.

Year after year the tourist-numbers kept growing and with that, the experience kept degrading.

i CAME FROM Australia 3 years ago , and now I am thinking of going back..Don't get me wrong , Thailand is a wonderful place 10 years ago , but what happened ! It is not the Thailand I knew before . Better check your news its been a few years since the grass hopper off hisself. I have been to a lot of seaside towns and cities over the years but they do tend to attract a certain type of visitor who can find trouble when others cannot. Best wishes to the deceased family in their time of loss

Its a shame that there arent enough police patrols at night.

Its hard to watch teenagers with no helmets riding past police and the police do nothing as it doesnt add to their paycheck, as meager as it is.

At night time, police are as rare as a Tasmanian Tiger, unless they do the occasional roadblocks.

Nobody has claimed EVERYBODY who is stabbed doesn't feel it immediately after being stabbed, but many do not, many think they have been punched.

Is Thailand a dangerous place to live? In my opinion NO! For those that go about their normal life and do not get into any conflicts then it is a safe place to live. However again just my opionion Thailand is a very dangerous place to get into an argument in the late or early hours in a bar or restaurant. Such arguements also occur in the west but normally includes only those that are directly involved and the police are called and the matter sorted by an arrest or two. I am not talking about gang related problems or groups of teenagers I am just referring to late night arguements which occur after too much alcohol. Here in Thailand the situation is much more dangerous, the police are seldom called to stop or prevent, they are usually only called after the event. Loss of face or assumed loss of face causes a severe response and the rights or wrongs of the initial disagreement are inmaterial, a quick flash of a knife and another one bits the dust. All very sad, and the following day when everything has calmed down the pointlessness of the whole incident is hard to comprehend but the damage and cost in the lives and well being of those connect to the victim and the perpetrator(s) remains for along time.

I am British and I worked in Germany and also for German owned companies and I found them to be decent people however every nationality has their pratts including my own country! I hope this matter is quickly brought to a correct conclusion and the victim RIP.

I read stories about ppl in the first worldwar running with just one leg left after the other was ripped away in shelling and i not doubt it a second....the victim has realized that his leg was gone when he was safe under a bridge.... terrible stories.

when my best friend died in a motobike accident in Sri Lanka it was the same, when I saw his wounds later in hospital I was shocked but very surprised that he got up, after the accident, walked about 40m back to the street, sit in a chair and smoked a cigarette when he was bleeding to death....he drove in a wall with bricks and barbed wire with around 100km/h

but btw, I never heard of stabwounds to the head...

Still, there will be a difference between barb wire wounds and stab wounds, and the doctor apparently called the police because of stab wounds!
