Any Experts On Qualifications For Esol And Ilr (Uk)

I know that i have posted about the Esol course before, But after speaking to 2 different suppliers of the ESOL Course, I have been given different answers.to what my wife Needs

carlisle Collage has stated that she needs ESOL Level 2 E2 to progress to the next level up and she has just started that course today.

My wife also started doing a Local Council funded course on Tuesday at the local Library and we were told by the teacher that its really easy to Pass, I explained to the Lady that she has the A1 in speaking and listening, and she told me that my wife just needed the writing and reading course that would get her to the Next level. I explained to her that Carlisle collage has told my wife that she needs Esol Level 2 E2 and they are quite happy to do the course for my wife.

speaking to the Teacher at the Carlisle collage today, she is saying that she thinks that the Esol level 2 E2 is going to be difficult for my wife to complete and maybe we should be looking for something less in qualification but she was unable to say what, apart from the Beginners course, But she was unable to say what qualification she would gain from a beginners Course.

So in summary, My wife is now doing to Esol Level 2 E2 courses, one council funded and One ran by the local collage, The Council course, the Teacher is saying that its easy to Pass and the Collage Teacher is saying that my will will struggle.

On a good note, Least she has enrolled into 2 course which should give her the qualification if she pass's, But the question is , Is there a course between the A1 Listening and speaking and the ESOL level 2 E2 that would meet the requirements of the UKBA.

ESOL Level 2 is classed as higher intermediate, and way above the level required for the Knowledge of Life an Language in the UK (KOL) requirement for ILR.

Are you sure they don't mean Entry Level 2?

If her English ability is at ESOL Entry Level 3 (pre intermediate) or better then her English is good enough to understand the study materials for the LitUK test and the test itself.

If below this, then at present she can satisfy KOL by obtaining a relevant ESOL qualification from an approved awarding body and demonstrating that she has made relevant progress.

The course are usually called ESOL with citizenship or ESOL with skills for life.

Relevant progress basically means progressing one level, e.g from entry level 1 (beginner) to entry level 2 (elementary). The first thing the course provider should do is assess her current level.

However, if she wont be applying for ILR until after October 2013 then an ESOL course will no longer be sufficient. ILR applicants from then on must have passed the Life in the UK test. and obtained level B1 of the CEFR in speaking and listening, or better.

On the paperwork It reads ESOL Level 2 E2, But i am sure that they will be a level below, If she needs to show an improvement, then she would only need to add reading and writing.

its so difficult to get information from the UKBA and its just about impossible to contact anyone.

Click on 'ESOL and citizenship course' near the bottom of Demonstrating your knowledge of language and life in the UK and that should tell you all you need to know. The college should know what to do as well; if they don't, find another college!

I have been on every page of the UKBA and followed the links Via Direct Gov site which tool me to the National Careers Service. 0800 100 90

They gave me the details of Both courses that my wife has already enrolled on and could not give me any other advice on a level between A1 Listening and speaking and ESOL Level 2. I did find out the E2 is just ESOL Level 2 and nothing more.

The National Careers Service were surprised that the Collage could not give me the correct information and told me to contact UKBA to find out what My wifes requirements would be but unable to find contact details for UKBA after checking all the links.

The levels below ESOL level 2 are: entry level 1, entry level 2, entry level 3 and level 1.

As said to you already, level 2 is way above what is required.

If her standard is at entry level 3 or better, then she doesn't need a course as she should be able to understand the study materials for the LitUK test and the test itself.

However, it sounds from what you have said that her standard, certainly in reading and writing, is below this and she needs a course that starts her at ESOL entry level 1. Taking such a course and progressing to entry level 2 will satisfy the requirement; provided the course meets the criteria in the link I provided above.

Have you asked the college if they are accredited and the course meets the requirements?

Have they confirmed that they will provide the required letter showing the criteria have been met and that they are accredited?

Have you asked them why they want her to do a difficult level 2 course when an entry level 1 one is sufficient?

Here is the reply back from the Council funded course

The ESOL course does contain citizenship materials, however the test is NOT a citizenship test.

The teacher will have carried out an initial assessment of your wife, and as I understand it, her initial assessment level was Entry Level 1. This means that she would be aiming for Speaking & Listening at Entry Level 2.

As regards applying for Indefinite Leave to Remain, I'm sure that you appreciate that even if your wife passes Speaking & Listening Entry Level 2, this does not guarantee that she will be successful in her application. As I said in a previous email, if your wife was able to pass the Life in the UK test then this would give her a much better chance with her application, although again it does not guarantee success.

The Life in the UK test is only available by booking it through the UKBA website.

The Awarding Body is Ascentis and they are approved.

One option you might like to consider is to employ the services of a solicitor who specialises in immigration applications

I am getting confused.

Have you asked Carlisle college if their course meets the requirements; i.e the citizenship element is derived from the document 'Citizenship Materials for ESOL Learners' (ISBN: 1-84478-5424), they are an accredited college and the awarding body is approved?

Have you also asked them why they want her to attempt to gain level 2 when she has been assessed, admittedly elsewhere, at entry level 1 and progression to entry level 2 will satisfy the language part of the requirement? Unless the 'E2' means entry level, but you say in post 5 that it doesn't. Did the college assess her before suggesting this course?

The council course may meet the requirement, as the awarding body is approved. But they don't seem to be confirming that their course is an accredited one nor that the citizenship element is derived from the correct source. They also seem to be pushing her towards taking the LitUK test; which is strange as they say their course is just speaking and listening. This also seems odd as everyone I know who has attended an ESOL course, including my wife (although she obtained ILR and citizenship before this was required for either) did reading and writing as well and I'm fairly sure that reading and writing is required for ILR.

All I can suggest is that you print out the requirements from the link in post 4 above, take it both to the college and the library course and show it to them, asking if they will confirm in writing that their course meets the requirements as per the UKBA website.

If they can't, or wont, look for a course that does.

I will check at the Collage on Thursday. On the paperwork from carlisle collage, It states the Course title ESOL ELSE E2/1B and the course code is 850/1E
