22 Korean Tourists involved in Boating accident off the coast of Pattaya

PATTAYA:--Twenty-Two Korean Tourists were involved in a boating accident just off the coast of Pattaya on Friday Afternoon which saw a full emergency response from the Pattaya Authorities.

Khun Choosak aged 46, the driver of the boat, operated by the Sor Sea World Company, declared an emergency as he traveled back from Larn Island with the Korean Tourists. He stated that the boat had hit a large wave and was taking on water. Pattaya Sea Rescue Units were scrambled and arrived to find the passengers, consisting of the Korean Tourists, a Thai Tour Guide and the captain of the boat, in the water. Luckily they were all wearing life jackets and were rescued and taken to the Bali Hai Port along with the boat which was towed to the port.

The authorities are now checking the boats license to ensure it was not carrying more people than is allowed and statements from the Korean Tourists and Thai Tour Guide were taken to determine what may have caused the problem with the boat. The Captain of the boat was detained by Police pending further investigations. No injuries were reported although some of the Korean Tourists were treated for exposure and taken to Hospital as a precaution.

Pattaya Ferry Sinks, all on board safe

PATTAYA:-- A two engined ferry boat leaving Bali hai pier in Pattaya is reported to have sunk with 27 passengers on board

The ferry service leaving the pier for Ko Larn island, just off the Pattaya shoreline, is reported to have sunk a few hundred metres from the pier, with a tour group on board.

All 27, reported to be A Korean tourist group, were rescued from the water with no fatalities and only minor injuries. Those injured were transported to Memorial Hospital.

Investigators say that from initial inspection, the hull of the boat had been holed at some point under the waterline

Such good luck that it wasn't further from shore - ferry drownings are all to common throughout asia.

No injuries were reported although some of the Korean Tourists were treated for exposure and taken to Hospital as a precaution.

exposure to what ? The filthy Pattaya Sea Water ?

Looks like a good news story from the point of view that everyone survived and everyone had life-jackets. It could have been a lot worse so a little word of praise for the Captain for ensuring that everyone came back alive.

Thai captains of the many tourist boats are exactly the same kind as van- and busdrivers. They only know one speed = Full Speed Ahead. They never try to figure out, how to avoid punching into all the big waves. I have had many uncomfortable boatrides in my life in Thailand. Not at least in Phuket and Krabi. Last time caused me a hurting back, which had to be treated by a chiropractor.

Totally agree. Considering how tragic similar stories often are, this can pretty much be considered good news. I hope the authorities play up the positive aspects of the incident no matter what the negatives might be. We need other operators to learn that life jackets and what would appear to be a good working radio are absolute musts.

Don't be too hasty in passing out the bouquets, it may well have been 'the captain' who caused the sinking and if the vessel was overloaded would have likely been responsible in contributing to the event. Had 10 people died

and it is found that the vessel was grossly overloaded (as would be normal SOP in a 3rd or 4th world country) why bestow praise.

I've just come back from Koh Larn. The sea was flat calm today. Likely he hit some floating object.

Could that first photo really be the boat that was carrying 20+ people?

Actually, I think the first OP photo depicts, as the article recites, "a full emergency response from the Pattaya Authorities."

I suppose there will be many dead ipads, iphones and other gadgets, too, due to the exposure

Equally why reach for the hangman's noose too?

The bit that interested me was the "hole below the water line"........I knew a guy that lived for his yachting, I'm not experienced in that hobby at all. I remember another friend going out with him for a 5 day trip and when he came back the subject of conversation was how friend #1 hardly slept, when asked why he said that he couldn't truly relax in the Solent and English Channel areas due to the combination of traffic, ( expected ) and semi-submersed objects such as shipping containers that had fallen off vessels. He said his worst ever accident was due to being holed below the water line by a container, he was lucky to survive.

Anyway, that's a just a story.....at least there was a life jacket each for these passengers, that's laudible in of itself.

True I notice they were going to check and see if he was licenced for that many tourists. the fact that they all had life jackets would indicate he was.

That's not a ferry - it's a small speedboat. I'll be surprised if it is certified to carry more than 10 - 15.

And most of the speedboats in Pattaya have a hull of plywood. Not necessarily of marin plywood. And that, especially without maintanence, will slowly absorb water making it soft and susceptible to easy penetration. I do not say that is the case with this particular boat.
