as it is a middle name it doesnt come up.

the rationale for Nicha, which apparently means clean, or pure, depending on who you ask, was that it is not that common, though i have seen the name increasingly of late, i have never met one; it is pronounceable by both thai and non-thai speakers; and its brevity negates any need to call her something stupid like bum, poo, apple, gift, mint, noi or anything to that effect.

That's what I thought!! Really thought I'd been cunning as a cunning thing with Kallista as we'd worked out the shortening would be Kally (can certainly live with that) so what do we find most people calling her - Lee (Ly)!! 2 syllables obviously too much!

dangerous though because ga lee can mean prostitute

lee is probably better

i like kallista though

haha I know - I have a wife Kluai who can be mispronounced as penis and a daughter who can be mispronounced as a pro!! fortunately my name, Narling Bargmar normalises the family

again clarification: yada doesnt mean wise in hebrew, it means knowlege. thai/israeli woman friend of mine has daubhter named yada exactly for that reason. however, me being anglo also , yada also sounds like blablablabla... (yadayadayda. or yoda.).

and kadisha?!!!!!!!!! awful. its the name of the group that buries people as their mission in life....

rose is a nice name, found in thailand (as a nickname); but to tell the truth, tryng ot find a name that everyone will be able to pronounce, wont cause difficulties in other countries, nice or meaningful meaning, well. a hard mission.

we had it for my kids in hebrew (so anglo grandparents could say the names more or less, and the meanings would be good meanings, adn also be good hebrew names here, not outdated etc.... a real mission.)

so why not give a basic thai name, an anglo middle name (or non formal nickname) and the child can change names if and when he/she wants too.

many thais change names. israelis add on names (after surviving accidents etc they add on the name chai, meaning life) or change names according to numerology. thais consult monks for names. after all, a rose by any other name is still a rose.

btw, my hubby has a girl's name: anong. in his village, they call him noi. here, he calls himself anon (wihtout the ng sound, basing that name on the name of some monk, cant remember full name.)anon in hebrew is close to anog (soft and feminine, similar to his real name), and arnon ( amasculine name)... enough that most folks here can deal with that name.

what about daniel (its an israeli girl's name btw, but thais shorten it to dani which is a good girl's name in many countries) and could also be french girl's name;

sukiyana (suki)- thai girl's name

thassana (could be shotened to sunny), appropriate in most countries as a girl's nickname

rina (most thais actually say rina with an r- means happiness in hebrew, but have met several thai girls with rina as a nick name, and i think ti is also found in other languages.

tawan (sunflower)

dok mai (flower) could be shortened to mai (pronounced my) but could also be may like the month

banya (wisdom) (like my name means :)) ),

my fave girl's name is actually my hubby's sis's name: pongsawan... i love the souond and the meaning...

lamai (the fruit)

mai (silk)- pronounced myy

yasmin (jasmine) was always one of my fave names , being both hebrew and arabic and exotic sounding, malee being the thai version

ah... found the same sort of thread a few years ago... we all more or less offerred the same names then...

I would advise against Sukiyana (Suki)!

ch as in chair

Could be construed as being named after the German philosopher.

what's wrong with suki? i had a thai friend in college once, hi/so from the lesser royals, named exactly that. suki for short... i thought it was exotic, pronouncable,

btw, in the states i hear many kids called thai (tai)... is that allowable as a thai name or is there a law against that as a name.... if we had a law agains israel and its varioations as a name half the country wouldnt exist.... funnily enough there is a child in hubby's village in korat called 'yisral' cause he was conceived in israel while the couple were here as labourers...

my friends husband is called Thai. Siam is a popular girls name. My son is called Pan-ya but he has a nickname that is transferable in both languages.

boo, do u know there is a thai tv serial, a bit old, called panya? its actually fun to watch, its thai bannork, old style, daily stuff... i watched the whole thing one day, i think yom kippur when there was nothing else to do.... about a boy named panya, who wants to be a singer in the big city, and about all his friends in his village...thru the internet obviously, i think it was in youtube

girls named siam? as a name or as a nickname?

My wifes name Areewan has its advantages...We are back here in Aus for a while and for some reason people have trouble with 'Areewan' calling her Areewon or whatever. However the shortened version Aree I think sounds nice and is easy for most with a tongue to pronounce. Of course in Thailand it will most likely be pronounced (incorrectly) as Aleewan....but whatever.

Cheers

I'll let James Woods tell you what's wrong with "Suki"! :

Our daughter's first two names are Arisa Jasmine.

Arisa is nice since it can be pronounced in a Thai way "Ah Ree Sah," or a more western way with a soft "i" like Marissa or Clarisa.

Jasmine is nice all around. Thais know it, westerners know it.

I like both of those...Arisa and Jasmine is the perfect dual name save its actually English but yrah good job!Does anyone recall the article about the new crazy Thai names like 7 a d mafia?? Too funny
