Most "dangerous" Websites

Recommended Posts

I am very far from beeing a computer-expert, so I have to rely on people that are. I heard it before and I heard it again yesterday: "There is not a single Free-Porn-Site in this world that is safe, as far as any kind of Malware is concerned." Therefore, they are the "most dangerous" websites there are. I have also heard, that the sole purpose of those sites is only to gain access to other computers to extract certain informations and/or plant bugs. Maybe just for the fun of it.

Opinions range from "only a question of time, before you catch a bug" to "if you have a top-noch anti-virus program, you are on the safe side no matter what". Anyone ?

Cheers.

Depending on your browser, you might want to add a plug-in that checks against known malware IPs.

Microsoft IE has it built in (it's called "SmartScreen").

But yes, there is no substitute for a decent on-access Antivirus package.

And of course, be careful what you click on. You wouldn't believe the number of people who routinely click on "A virus has been found on your PC, click here to clean it" when it's just a bloody pop up window with a link to a world of shit.

When going to websites Norton 360 evaluates them and gives you a warning if there are known threats at the sites. Also, when just Googling, Norton will show whether the sites have known threats. See below image of the type of indication given where I googled ThaiVisa. And like any typical antivirus program it will check file downloads from sites for viruses.

In the past I used AVG, Microsoft Security Essentials and now Avast, never any infection from any 'adult-site' - every week scan my PC with MalwareBytes Anti-Malware nothing.

Looks like urban legend...

PS I don't say it is NOT possible just that every site is dangerous is not true in my opinion.

Looking for free porn, music or software, using p2p, torrent, installing cracks or patchs etc it's quite dangerous if you don't know the basic risk of what are you doing.

All the time you must see and check the extensions, never hide the extensions, because in this way its easy to execute a malware called sexy_girl.exe

Photos all the time use .jpg .png .gif etc, videos .avi, .mov, .mp4 etc ...you can learn more about the extensions here http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Windows_file_types

All the executables that come from internet are a risk, the antivirus will detect almost 99% but as in real life, the vaccine come after someone get the infection so the 1% happens when you are one of the first infected.

This 1% could be a bug in your browser, or a bug in other kind of software that have internet access. For a normal user, it will be very important keep update everything, browser, java, flash, net framework periodically or disable these from your browser.

if you don't know about some crack or patch (obviously these things are 99% illegal) you can check the file in more than 40 antivirus, with crowd votes and comments for known files in virustotal.com

At the end some of the infections use social networks, and emulate the plugins so can get access to cookies from facebook, tweeter, google+ etc and get some info to attempt foolish the user.

"Tor Bundle", plus "sandboxie" and some good antivirus could be enough safe.

https://www.torproject.org/

http://www.sandboxie.com/

and wherever that you install, you must choose advanced because now exist some advanced installer plugins, for example Open Candy http://www.opencandy.com/faqs/#what that can install by default, toolbars and annoying third parties software if you aren't checking what you are installing.

of course have many more layer of protections, freezers, virtual machines, dns blockers, and many threads too.

The Kaspersky range of products work great at preventing 99.99% of problems as soon as you go to a site or get a dodgy email. Never had ANY problems with malware or virus since starting to use their products a few years ago. Can go to any site and not have a problem.

good info there.. I use every tool you mention I think.. plus a few more.. What ITGabs is saying is on the right track for sure. Any crack/patch/ or keygen gets run in sandboxie so I can see what it's doing. I also run much more advanced stuff that would be a huge inconvenience for the average user but the stuff listed here is good stuff. I use virus total regularly to check false positives.

Also, there is a free app call winpatrol that keeps an eye on all major changes that a virus usually does to keep itself running. Such as startup and services and browser helper objects.

http://www.winpatrol.com/

I would recommend that as nice addition that stays out of the way.

Kaspersky has always been one of the top rated anti virus apps on the market. They have the highest detection rate in the biz.

There is.

It's called Linux, especially if you use it with a brain.

Learn, make the big jump, and say bye bye to 99% of your virus, spyware and malware problems.

I'm very happy with my paid for Eset. I have found it to be very good at preventing attacks rather than detecting them after. It also stops me from accessing any website it deems to be unsafe. Cost me around 900 Baht for the year. Got it from the bookstore shop you get near Tesco's

in Antivirus the best is BitDefender 50usd aprox, second Kaspersky 40usd aprox (check on internet)

I want to find something like iptables for windows, I did some things with netsh but have not comparation.

I am not sure about gui firewalls or complete suite for windows, Time ago many companies using norton as security suite but many report performance problems and I saw some virus in the networks and Norton didn't catch them so I am not sure

virus in linux are very strange, bot relays irc stuff probably, I actually using clamav for deleting virus from windows emails.

There's a free extension for Safari that does the same thing. From BitDefender.
