Debate govt failings: senators

BANGKOK: -- A group of Senators yesterday filed a motion with Senate Speaker Nikom Wairatpanit seeking a general debate on the government's "alleged failure in running the country".

Trang Senator Wichian Kanchong led a group of 62 elected senators to call for ministers to explain their alleged failure to: shore up agricultural prices, curb violence in the restive South, fail to work in unity to prevent future floods, and failing to bring about national reconciliation.

The group said although the policies on agricultural product prices had increased farmers' incomes, they could also hurt the market system and allow corruption. Moreover, it was a huge burden on the government's budget.

Nikom said he would verify the group's request and consult on whether it could be combined with one submitted by appointed Senator Paiboon Nititawan, as such a debate could be allowed only once in a parliamentary session.

Paiboon's group yesterday sought a special debate with the government about its rice pledging project.

Meanwhile, PM's Office Minister Niwatthamrong Bunsongpaisal said the government planned to publish booklets featuring government achievements after one year in office. They would include details of 16 government policies such as the first car and first house assistance payments schemes, and the rice pledging scheme.

He said he would propose the draft of the booklet for Cabinet approval today. If it gets the nod, it should be ready for sending to the Parliament in early November. Parliament then would schedule a date for the government's achievement declaration.

62 of the 76 senators calling for a please explain on the "alleged (although to be honest it is actual not alleged) failure in running the country" is a healthy number which must include many with Pheu Thai allegiance. Would be really good to have also on the score card the most important need of Thailand governance right now in "what is being done to reign in the rampant corruption from within government and down".

Might be to much to ask for but I am hoping the senators have under the "failure to reconcile the nation" a clear directive to the puppet doll Yingluck and her brought cronies the directive to kick the fugitive criminal PM in Duabai's ass to the side line so that the country and can move on.

Since the financial collapse in the west it seems obvious to me that the three most critical indicators of stability are GDP - fiscal deficit - and most importantly debt levels, the latter being the one that is avoided in every Thai statement I have seen since PT took office, even if they came clean I don't think anyone could believe anything they say since they "by their admittance" tell lies to make themselves look good

Debt levels are the single thing that will cause fiscal collapse of a country and as we have all seen in the past year or so governments will keep spending and borrowing until they can't any more - then the shit hits the fan

I'd like to see the debt levels since PT took office, I'd say they are going through the roof trying to finance all the populist promises - lining their pockets - feeding corruption.

Eventually it will all surface but will be too late - 1997 here we come again

Indeed they must be up, however they are absolutely piddling in comparison with the EU and USA. I think we are more likely to see the Euro collapse than a Thai baht debt crisis.

Thailand only does debates !!

Incorrect. Thailand also forms committes (once they have debated it). Then, after the committee issues its report (if ever) and the committee reminds everyone why the committee was formed (since everyone has already forgot), the report gets debated (before a follow-on committee is formed).

On second thought, you are right....Thailand only does debates.

Your first statement has a ring of truth to it, considering some of the verdicts on a large number of cases rendered by the judicial system here.

I do think parts of Bangkok, Pattaya, Phuket and particularly the deep south can sometimes be dangerous places, but I'm sure the vast majority of TVF members resident in Thailand would disagree that where they spend their daily lives in the Kingdom is dangerous. Certainly not for me.

As for your statement "nobody wants to do anything about it", I agree that would seem to be the case.

A post-it note would suffice!!! What an inglorious year of non-achievement has been witnessed by all.

This can only be described as a wasted year in Thailand's historyermm.gif.

It's so true. Even though Thailand has laws but nobody cares to enforce it. Worse yet, most of the populations don't respect those laws and they twist and turn those laws for their own benefits. It's pathetic.

Isn't the major part of the problem that this current maladministration is being manipulated or manged by a bail jumping convicted criminal and his acolytes ?

Money and an amnesty for the criminal puppet master is the only agenda this maladministration has in its sights as we all know, now people are beginning to see through the facade that is PTP and at last warning bells are ringing and questions that need to be answered are being asked.

Aha me hearties the storm cones are hopefully being hoisted at last

I attended a funeral lately up north, it was a village afair and lots of people drifted in and out of the family home throughout the day paying their respects, as the day progressed I noticed a police presence of about 20 officers arrive - I assumed they were there to pay their respects......but no, to my shock and horror they were there to contol the young drunk drugged up teens that arrived in numbers as the evening progressed

A family funeral ended up as a pitched battle with the police

as the night progressed - very poorly handled might I add

I was actually quite shocked that this sort of behavior existed in the North of Thailand, there is an element of youth boiling over in this country never mind the corruption of the grown ups and the crime rates in tourist areas

that is what I observed and for me it paints a rather dismal picture

I'm reading the signs and for me they are not good

Don't bother telling me I'm a Thailand basher and go home, I'm simply sharing concerns and observations that if not addressed properly very soon, this country will have a melt down

<deleted> The drug business here is run from jail - that just says it all, corruption at it's worst/best

rant over

Perhaps the miracle is delayed because the Second Coming has yet to take place ? rolleyes.gif
