I've lived here for 10 plus years, but this is the first time someone is coming to visit for more than 30 days (from the US). My question is not how to get extensions beyond 30 days. My question is, "Will airline companies in the US will allow you to board the plane without proof on onward travel if your return flight is 58 days later?" Thanks in advance.

If you have a valid visa or re-entry permit then yes you will be allowed to board..

If you have no visa ie intend to enter on 30 day visa exemption, then they may insist on seeing a ticket out within 30 days and might deny you boarding.

I was under the impression right of entry is at the discretion of the Immigration in bkk, regardless of whether you have a visa or not.

I have not heard the airlines have any jurisdiction whatsoever....has anyone ever been asked for it?

so in he comes on his 30 days then goes to the airport here for a re entry for 30 more days, will cost 1000 baht, fill a form in, 2 more photos and done in 10 minutes.

When I'm returning to Thailand on the end of a ticket, they always search through my passport to see if I have a visa to stay. I know that's not the same thing, but if I didn't have a proper visa (work or retirement) I'm assuming the airline could object.

last 2 times (in 11 months) i returned from US to thailand, i was asked to show proof of visa by the airlines in LAX...i was on the return leg of a round trip ticket, i showed my spousal visa and re-entry permission, a supervisor was called to verify the validity and i was allowed to board.. ... OTOH... i have a friend who arrived from LAX about 30 days ago on a multiple entry tourist visa and he does not have a return ticket or even a ticket onward and it was no problem, leaving USA or entering BKK... go figure...mileage definitely varies..

You are only allowed into Thailand visa free for 30 days if you have a onward ticket out of Thailand within 30 days of arrival. If you cant show an onward ticket the check-in agent may not let you on the flight as the airline can then be fined for taking someone to Thailand with the wrong documents. The fine is usually a few thousand dollars and the person has to go back on the same flight. If the flight is full someone will need to moved off to make space (more expense to the airline).

If the check-in agent doesn't ask you should be ok at Thai immigration as they dont always check either. If you want stress free travel get a tourist visa. If you dont want the expense of buying another ticket when you are denied boarding with your fixed dated outbound flight get a tourist visa.

You wont get a 30 day re-entry on a 30 day visa exempt.

You only need and get need that if you are on an extension of stay and its to to keep your current visa alive while you are out of the country. As already said its not immigration you have to worry about its the airline. A tourist visa will suffice to satisfy all.

A re-entry permit does not add any time to the current entry at all - it just keeps it alive if you want to travel and return - a 30 day entry is only a 30 day entry.

Have your friend go online to the nearest royal Thai consulate and he can download and print the proper applications for a 60 day single or multi entry visa. Send it with the passport and postage paid return envelope and he should have it back in less than a week. Easy breezy and makes for a stress fee departure.

Interesting because Emirates tried to refuse to let me board a flight from Dubai to Bangkok because I didnt have an onward ticket or a visa but I told them I booked online and didnt have the details with me and they let me board.

I just came back to Thailand from Perth Australia with a one way ticket and no onward flight via Thai airways and they didnt seem to care.

Ignore all the good advice offered. Do what you want. Certainly saving the 60 day Visa fee and mailing charges is worth your friend showing with expectations of a great visit and having it all turn to crap. I came on a one way ticket with one year retirement Visa. And both United Airlines in ELP and Thai Air at LAX wanted to see the Visa before issuing boarding passes. So either a 60 day visa with 58 day return or 30 day RT ticket. I understand the purpose of the forum his to help travelers with unforeseen situations not to help them circumnavigate the rules that the majority follow.
