Prayuth to rebels: show your faces

BANGKOK: -- Army chief General Prayuth Chan-ocha yesterday called on the masterminds of the southern violence, who have never claimed responsibility, to come out of the shadows.

"If they want to talk to the authorities, they have to identify themselves," the general said.

There were many circles of insurgent leaders who do not live in Thailand but instead hide out in many foreign countries, he said.

"They freely give orders for violent incidents to be staged as much as possible. More and more innocent people have been killed in a bid to destabilise the situation," he said.

The Army chief said authorities have tried every possible measure to defuse the tensions in the three southern border provinces - from compensating the victims and building understanding and mutual respect among the people in the region to enforcing applicable laws.

However, the laws have been imposed "in a Thai way" and only some were strictly enforced.

"We don't want to create negative repercussions. There are both people who suffer and people who don't, so we need to use the law appropriately," he said.

There would be no special precautions taken for possible insurgent attacks next Thursday, the eighth anniversary of the Tak Bai incident in Narathiwat, when many Muslim protesters died of asphyxiation while being transported to a military camp after their arrests. "The authorities always take rigorous measures, whatever the [date]. Civil officials, police and soldiers work 24 hours a day every day," he said.

Asking cowards to show their faces is a little different to asking a bully. Sociopaths and psychopaths are the same, the sociopath playing his game and quite happy to be in the open, but the psychopath remains hidden not seeking attention, only to carry out cowardly acts. The MO is the same, no guilt, no shame, no remorse, no conscience, just how they remain in society amongst us is the factor. I doubt this request will do anything. Get the Muslims inform on the Islamists and then let the investigations reveal who these people are and remove them from society as quickly as possible. Surely a million baht reward for successful apprehension and conviction is cheaper in terms of loss of life and ongoing damage as well as maintaining troops and special forces in the area.

Is the General naive? Does he really think the rebels would do that? This sounds more like an act of desperation - or a sign that he does not know what to do. These rebels have a card up their sleeve. It is their anonymity that protects them. It is the ability to strike anywhere and any time that terrorizes the population and the authorities. If the good General wants to improve the situation in the south, a different approach may be necessary. But too bad for the General, he is only following orders. His opponents, however are not. It is like a boxing match with the Generals hands tied behind his back.

The general states "There were many circles of insurgent leaders who do not live in Thailand but instead hide out in many foreign countries, he said." By foreign countries I imagine this is shorthand for Malaysia/Philippines/Iran. If this is so, logically Thai authorities know who they are, so why haven't they requested international arrest warrants?

"Prayuth to rebels: show your faces"

Hah! Fat chance of that ever happening.

As Simple1 stated "If this is so, logically

Thai authorities know who they are, so

why haven't they requested international

arrest warrants?"

Clue: MONEY, Big MONEY is being made

by prolonging this. If the same crap was

happening near BKK...it would have been

eliminated long ago.

Bangkok doesn't really give a shit and is

only blowing flatulance in the wind.

"However, the laws have been imposed "in a Thai way" and only some were strictly enforced."

This says it all! Criminals and lyars such as him, because they wear an uniform, can kill without facing any concequences!

"The authorities always take rigorous measures" unless the authorities are at fault, then nothing happens!

Maybe Prayuth should stop lying, killing and toturing and start showing respect for all Thai people! Once people see he is sincere then they can start talking but everybody knows that there is no humanity in Prayuth!

Maybe because they are citizens of those countries. Terrorists recognize no country unless it is useful to them and their violent ways.

It is apparent enforcing the law "in a Thai way" hasn't worked.

Should have listened to Anand's panel back in 2005 and we could have possibly been on the way to some resolution of the conflict.

Too much for the old guard to stomach though and the very good ideas were never implemented.
