I think the issue is that she doesn't want certain activities to occur in her building. But the argument I am seeing presented here is racism; that is a straw man argument, she is not racist. If she didn't want gambling or drinking to happen in her rooms, she has that right, but she is not allowed to prohibit extramarital sex. That seems to me to be a discrimination of her rights as a property owner. I wonder if a cult group wanted to use her facility to perform rituals that were offensive to her and against her faith, that she would be forced to allow that too.

It's not about racism. It's about homophobia. They happen to be similar.
Speaking before nearly 600 people at the Palmer House Hilton Hotel, Coretta Scott King, the wife of the late Dr. Martin Luther King Jr., Tuesday called on the civil rights community to join in the struggle against homophobia and anti-gay bias. “Homophobia is like racism and anti-Semitism and other forms of bigotry in that it seeks to dehumanize a large group of people, to deny their humanity, their dignity and personhood,” King stated. “This sets the stage for further repression and violence that spread all too easily to victimize the next minority group.” – Chicago Defender, April 1, 1998, front page.

I get what you are suggesting but I don't accept it. If she had a thing about sodomy sex acts she should put up a big sign: No Sodomy Sex Acts Allowed On the Premises and that would include heterosexual sodomy sex acts. That's not the same thing as banning gay PEOPLE as a class. It's more like a NO SMOKING sign.

Do you think she could get away with a no sodomy sign? I doubt it. In fact I think she would have gotten even more attention.

I do think this is about not wanting extramarital sex, she did not allow unmarried hetero couples to share a room either.

I assume, because I can't be sure, that if she only had a restaurant, she would allow anyone to eat there. The difference is that with a bedroom there is usually sex involved.

OK, I don't know whether it would be legal or not to ban sodomy in your B and B in England but it would be a hilarious sign to see on entering. Personally, I would find such a sign ... alluring.

Actually in the UK sodomy was punishable by death until 1861. After that date the buggers were deported to Australia.......smile.png Dunno if that accounts for PigeonJakes antipathy towards gays.....

How do you know there would be sex involved? Ever heard of lesbian bed death? Does she have a room camera to spy?

Anyway the court ruled she was treating gay unmarried couples differently than straight unmarried couples:

Taking the case to court, the two men were awarded damages of $2,300 each after the judge ruled that the B&B owners "treated them less favorably than she would treat unmarried heterosexual couples in the same circumstances."

Anyway, it was clearly discrimination. If it is against the law in that area, the couple had a legal recourse and they took it. They should be congratulated for standing up against discrimination rather than to harassed by a far right wing political figure.

The courts should busy themselves with sorting bigger problems, than this bs IMHO

Yeah, like suing McDonalds because the coffee was too hot.

I've travelled with office mates and sometimes I've had to share a room, what would she do?

Marriage is allowed in many country's now, what will she do ? ask Mr Smith and Mr Smith what is your relationship?

She wants to prohibit certain activities in her building? Well the thing is that she can. If she kept her house a private house, she can. She can do whatever it is she wants to do in her own home. If she wants to engage in homosexual activities in the privacy of her own home great. If she wants to prevent homosexual activities in the privacy of her own home. Great. If she wanted to prohibit a cult group from performing rituals offensive to her in the privacy of her own home great. I regularly prevent cult groups from using my home to perform rituals.

However, when she opened the doors to make it a bed and breakfast, it's really not her private property anymore. If she opens it to the public, she has to share it with the public. She made that decision. And that means that she has to share it with gays too.

I don't think it's about PC or freedom of religion. To me it's an issue of public laws designed to cause a public nuissance. Everyone has whatever freedom of speech they want...in their own home. You [meaning anyone, not identifying you canuckamuck] can be in your own home giving speeches about how great Hitler was. If you want to decorate your bedroom with pictures of Hitler and swastikas. Great. However, if you want to march up and down on my street with pictures of Hitler and swastikas, then we have a problem. It's not "your" area anymore. It's an area that you have to share with me.

When the venue changes from your own home to the public areas, your free speech and religious belief rights go down. Free speech does not mean I can yell "fire" in a crowded theater or yell "I have a bomb" in the airport. Freedom of religion means I can choose whatever deity I choose to pray to. It does not mean I can make you obey the same deity. Someone may believe it's their religious right to wear a burka [which I don't argue with] it doesn't mean you get to force every woman wear a burka. So while it is her religious belief that homosexuality is against the Christian belief, it doesn't give her the right to force her belief on others by denying them the ability to stay at her bed and breakfast.

That's why its in the news. A right wing politician, Nick Griffin, Chairman for the British National Party, published the ADDRESS of the gay couple.

Thanks jingthing, still think of them in their former guise, I shall now refer to them as the BNP. Never seen such a bunch of queers in denial....tongue.png
