San Sai Bars?

There are several good restaurants with music in the San Sai area but can anyone recommend any bars in the area - maybe with some music/TV/pool/socialise with the other customers??? The Western Bar has some good live music but no bar as such and the food leaves a lot to be desired.

Not trying to put you down. But you asked question that got me thinking. Your post said

"can anyone recommend any bars in the area -maybe with some music/TV/pool/socialise with the other customers"

It got me to thinking why is it that bars are where every one goes to socialize and meet people.

On another thread a 24 year old lady asked where she could meet some people to socialize and site see with and all the answers came back with bars. I suggested try a popular coffee house. Go see what she wanted to see and she might find like minded people there.

Just wondering.wai2.gif

Sorry about that. My mistake. I thought you were just looking for a place to meet people. I was out in never never land again (I am sure thee will be some along to confirm that) and it did not cross my mind that it was only evening entertainment you were interested in.

Sorry about that. Can't help you.

Because this is Chiang Mai, where there are virtually no social meeting places for farangs and many consider the bars as the best or only options for perhaps being able to mix and have conversations with other Western visitors or ex-pats. These do not necessarily have to be girly bars, but drinking establishments something like a local pub in England.

There are sports activities that people can join, such as tennis or joining a gym, but not everyone is in to sports or keep fit, so that mostly leaves only the bars to recommend.

There are a few coffee shops around, but again, coffee shops are not everyone’s cup of tea and many are not open during the late hours and the owners do not like customers lingering for too long periods.

Makes perfect sense to me and don`t see anything odd about it, unless you know of better alternatives that you could recommend where farangs can socialise and hang out on a regular basis which are not too expensive?

Bamboo Bar - San Sai Noi. No pool table, but otherwise I think it would suit what you are asking. It's cheap too.

The owner is a nice jovial host but the place is a bit of a kip .My wife refuses to use the toilets there and so can not be perswaded to go .Also he has a big screen showing football every night ,with people glued to it .For people uninterested in Socker its not much cop ..

There is a new bar restaurant called Andrews which opened about 6 months ago .It is also run by an English man ,and is very clean and well presented .It deserves more customers than it presently gets .Its near to the small Tesco/Lotus on the outer ring road the 121 .Take the road at that traffic lights towards town direction and its down about 100 meters on the left ..

Bamboo Bar is not the most comfortable place although the people are friendly. they desperately need more [comfortable] tables and chairs and a good cleaning wouldn't hurt!

the other place mentioned is much more comfortable. the owner is an Aussie. nice chap.

Coming from the 118 in the direction from Doi Soiket turn left at the junction to go on to the ring road. On the ring road, take the second small exit (very soon) and then take the first right. Go straight over the crossroads. You will see the bar when you reach the temple at the end of the street, on the right hand side.

Yes it is a bit rustic, but it has a really great atmosphere.

I have never discussed football or motorcycles when I have been there (I know nothing about either topic) and I have spoken with Joolz and Denise a lot!

Which ring road please, first ring or second ring (121)? The map posted by DiabloBo seems to say 1001 insead of 118 (CM-Doisaket Road). As I live on 121 and it would be handy for me to head there or Andrews to get a few drinks when my wife gets into an argument with me the next time which is very soon.

LOL

They are referring to Thannon Somphot Chiang Mai 700 Pi which is what they are calling the Ring Road - I think.

Correct! I think it is also called the first ring road. I have no idea why the roads in Chiang Mai have various names as well as a numerical one! Hope you manage to find it.

elektrified, we newbies need ah wood sor (experienced ones) like yourself to advise us, that's for sure. This forum is very helpful indeed.

You see, the next time my wife pisses me off and drives me out I don't want to go into town and not able to find it back home. Last time in CM with our daughter, they ganged up on me. I drove out into town to drink and it took me more than a couple of hours to find it back home. Nancy said my wife should have taken me to get a VD test. LOL...

I've given up on the idea of "ring roads" as every time I have said that to a Thai, they always give me that look of huhhh?? always followed by pai nai??? In fact I don't think Thannon Somphot Chiang Mai 700 Pi even has a number. I could be wrong but I haven't noticed it. I believe the next one further away from the center is the 121 which the Thais refer to as "supa", not to be confused with the No. 11 Super Highway which they also call "supa".

Anyways, good luck finding the bar. It's not too difficult once you get the first time it is easy to find afterwards.

The 1001 is the road out to Mae Jo. the ring road is labeled on Google Earth as Thanon Somphot Chiang Mai 700 Pi . From the 1001, go right on to the ring road. Just before you merge onto the ring road there are two roads going to the LEFT. The 1st goes into a housing tract take the second road. Around 300m up this road there is a "Y" intersection, go right. When you hit the next stop sign, go straight ahead for 150m and the Bamboo Bar will be on your right side.

Do all of you people know that the bar in question is literally a hole in the wall? I'm not saying anything bad about it, in fact the people there are very friendly and drink prices are fair. But it is a tiny little place with limited seating.

Yeah it's pretty small compared to other places, but that is an exaggeration. There are about six tables with benches etc, as well as the stools around the bar, I think we must have sat more than thirty people in there before.
