What's The Best Way To Augment A 12Call Payg Sim To Achieve Inexpensive Overseas Sms?

Hi everyone.

I have a friend who is spending 20 baht per Overseas SMS on their 12Call pay as you go Sim.

Without losing the number what's the best way to achieve a more reasonable SMS rate?

For example I'm paying 5 baht an SMS from DownUnder.

Do SMSes have to be originated on the mobile? Do recipients need to be able to reply to these SMSes?

There are a lot of companies which allow you to originate SMSes, on a number of platforms, and receive replies, again on disparate platforms.

One is Telemessage: http://www1.telemessage.com/

Message pricing is based on the destination: http://www1.telemessage.com/

Another: http://www.clickatell.com/

There have been some threads on this subject, but none in recent memory - maybe a search would yield some decent recommendations.

Obviously there are great IP-based messaging applications like WhatsApp!, Line, Tango, Viber but those may not address your application?

For this user, access to a PC will be more expensive than the SMS fee itself.

Thanks for your detailed response.

Unfortunately we are looking for a SIM based solution.

Tell the person to call AIS and change the "package", My sms's to Aus are 6b each. Iam on pre pay AIS.

Does AIS Thailand have an English online package listing?

So SMSes have to be originated on a mobile phone with a One-2-Call?AIS SIM, that is the only option? Pre-paid? Post-paid? Not even a smartphone with a data package? Do recipients have to be able to reply to the SMS?

I guess it would help if you could provide all the details re: the application.

Without more detail, the only option I can think of would be an International SMS Package:

http://www.ais.co.th/12call/en/promotion_special.html

20 SMS - 30 days - 150 baht

50 SMS - 30 days - 350 baht

So 7 baht (OK, 7.49 with VAT) per SMS, best price.

I think you could do better with a Smartphone + data package + SMS service provider: ~ 4.25 baht/SMS to the UK; 2.75 baht/SMS to the U.S.A; 3.65 baht/SMS to Australia - excluding the amortized cost of the data plan, which depends on the number of SMSes per month, but figure 0.5 baht/SMS for ~ 100 SMSes per month. SMSes can be originated with an app, or even via email generated on a smartphone.

Sounds a good deal.

It's a pity no one has a" pay as you use- at a low fee" rather than "this many per month use or lose".

Over here I pay 5 baht per International SMS regardless of how many I make.

Monthly access fee is 31 baht.

Plus VAT, so 6.42 baht/per.

I looked in the AIS and One-2-Call websites and couldn't find any variable rate/international SMS promotions or packages.

Can you provide any more detail re: your promotion? Maybe a name, or package, or link?

I think One-2-Call and Happy/DTAC did have some international SMS rates in the 4 ~ 5 baht range a few years ago, and those may still be honored for those who were customers then, but I couldn't find any current references to those today.
