Rabbit Card - Will It Be Used In Future For Airport Rail Link?

Can't seem to find any information on this.

Rabbit card can be used on the BTS and BRT (as of last month)

Supposedly will be in use for the MRT as of December (anyone have links or specific dates on this?)

Next logical step would be for use on the Airport Rail Link.

Does anyone know if this will eventually happen? ie actual information, article, link etc?

Would be brilliant to have a complete Octopus style stored value card that covers all major rail services. Even better if 7-11 came on board...

What say you?

cheers

Thanks kkerry - yes saw that link, and some others - about MRT accepting Rabbit 'late 2012' but wondered if there has been a press release with an exact date (after all its mid-November)

Main issue I'm chasing is if anyone knows whether we'll be able to use our Rabbits to hop on to the Airport link some time in future. Pardon the pun.

SARL is SRT so I guess they'd have to be convinced/incentivized to participate. Maybe if more of their City Line customers, many of whom probably connect to the BTS and/or MRT, express an interest SRT will think about it. Nah.

I think many expect the Rabbit card to work on the MRT come 1/1/13, but maybe we also expect an announcement ~ 31/1212 saying it has been delayed?

The SARL does have a stored value card, no ride card AFAIK - and some student/senior discounting.

Finally found something concrete I think

Thailand to pilot common ticket system for public transport

Thailand’s Ministry of Transport will start a pilot programme to use a common ticket system for all Bangkok public transport by mid-2013, and the system will be fully completed before the end of 2014.

Deputy Minister Chadchart Sittipunt said that the linkage of the system will cover Expressway, BTS Skytrain, Mass Rapid Transit (MRT), Airport Rail Link, Public Bus, and Express Boat.

The pilot project will start with the linkage of Expressway system (M-Pass and Easy Pass),BTS Skytrain system, Airport Rail link system, and Public Bus system. For Public Bus system, currently the Bangkok Mass Transit Authority will propose a plan to the cabinet a plan to replace existing buses with new buses that can support the common card system, said Sittipunt.

“The real operation of this system will commence at the end of 2014,” he added.

Bangkok Mass Transit System Pcl, the operator of BTS Skytrain, and Bangkok Metro Pcl, the operator of the underground MRT service, has introduced the joint “Rabbit” smart card as a common ticketing platform to enable commuters in Bangkok to use one card to access both public transport services.

Sounds good - its the first thing I've read which gives some sort of plan detail....

The Rabbit Card will probably never be used on the ARL. Likewise, the 7-11's payment system is probably not going to be the ticket (pun intended!)

The news article quoting Dr. Chadchart is somehwat correct. A real effort to develop and implement a comprehensive common ticketing system is now being carried out by a mullti-national consortium / team, but the timeframe he mentions is VERY ambitious

What makes you say this?

Is the article incorrect, or will it be a different cross-platform (another pun) system implemented instead of the Rabbit?.

Lots of these puns showing up..

Some places manage to integrate everything and get it right e.g. Singapore, while others like Melbourne Australia haven't despite investing an absolute fortune.

It boils down to politics and relationships more than technology.

The Rabbit Card is a BTS-led initiative and was not mandated by the government to cover any other systems or modes, rather they are slowly working towards integration (recently with BRT, and at some future point with MRT) because it makes long term business sense. They likely make more money off of the Rabbit Card usage at Burger King, Starbucks, etc than they would from BRT and MRT.

The big hold up with getting the MRT, ARL, and other operators / systems onboard comes down to revenue sharing; who gets what and how should the process be managed? Even with new leadership from K. Prapat and ADB investing time and money to assist the SRT with organizational issues, I highly doubt they will come on board with the Rabbit before a new system is implemented.

On the other hand, the common-ticket system Dr. Chadchart mentioned is being built from the ground up per se to avoid as many of the political hurdles as possible (as well as technological of course!).
