First Ever Thai Winter Olympian

Featured Replies

Do you live in a world where all sport should be played by the very best. If you're not David Beckham then pack up and go home. Surely these sort of people (Eddie the Eagle) make up the stories that make the Olympics special.

Afterall, who remembers who got the gold in E the E's event?

That is one of the reasons why a certain standard should be expected to compete. Some people dedicate their lives to the pursuit of their chosen sport and having relatively talentless individuals like Eddie the Eagle overshadow them is just wrong.

Of course, sport is about a lot more than just who wins, but the olympics are meant to be a celebration of sporting excellence, not an opportunity for any johnny come lately who fancies giving it a bash. Remember that Eric the Eel character who swam for for some African country in the Olympics? He'd only swam for the very first time about six months beforehand and barely managed to complete the 100m freestyle, yet he became one of the stars of that event and was inundated by the world's media just because he was shit. Surely the Olympics is about some sort of standard?

Nobody is suggesting that people shouldn't bother with sport unless they are the best, after all everyone has to start somewhere. But there are all sorts of regional, amateur competitions for those who are serious about it to work their way through. The Olympics is the reward for those who show sufficient dedication and talent, and many have to make a lot of sacrifices in their life in order to compete at that stage. They should be the people who provide the stories that make the Olympics special.

This time, Prawat Nagvajara finished the course, came in last. See the results here.

I wonder if it will be in the Thai newspapers tomorrow.
