I think you are saying you have a double entry tourist visa.

If your time is up on the first entry, yes, you need to take a ride to Mae Sae/Tachilek to exit Thailand, and come back in.

There are no closer or cheaper alternatives, if that is what you are asking.

You can get 15 days if you bounce the border at Mae Sai (or fly out and in for the 30), but for getting an actual Tourist Visa, you'd have to go to the likes of Vientiane, Laos, to Thai embassy/consulate and apply. That could then be extended at CM Imm later on for a further 30... I think.

do you want to do a border run or a visa run ?

the border runs are done very easily up in mai sai - you can use a company or take the bus yourself.

a visa run to get a new double entry visa put in your passport is done at vientiane - it's a long way and flying to udon thani with nok air is a good method for first time, there's a minibus at the airport to take you to the border.

If you already have a multiple entry tourist visa (single, double or triple) then be sure to only use it close to its expirey date. Otherwise you will lose whatever portion is still on the visa. For example, if you have a double entry tourist visa then that entitles you to two 60 day periods of which you need to go out of the country once. If you have been in Thailand for 30 days and decide to go out of the country then you will lose that portion remaining on your first entry. In other words, your 120 day double entry tourist visa now becomes just a 90 day tourist visa.

From what I understand, you can not apply for a multiple entry tourist visa if you are already here. And, you need to fly out of Thailand to apply from another country. You can't just drive across a border into Myanmar, Laos or Cambodia and apply from there. That is to discourage the back packers and those living on the bare minimum from living in Thailand on a year-round basis.

Your post is not clear. Do you want a new double entry tourist visa, or do your want to activate the secong entry of your current double entry visa? If you want a new visa you will have to go to a Thai Embassy/consulate in another country - Laos, either Vientiane or Savannakhet. If you want to activate the second entry you can do a border run to Mai Sai or Mai Sot, Myanmar

A border crossing would be visa exempt entry of 15 days by land or 60 days if you have a tourist visa (for most nationalities).

To obtain a tourist visa would require application at a Thai Consulate outside Thailand (from Chiang Mai normally Vientiane is used).

You do not have to fly there - you can use bus to Udon/Nong Khai border or fly to Udon/travel to border.

You can always obtain a re-entry permit to maintain remainder of a visa stay and ability to extend your stay when you have to leave early of a short period.
