MaprangHolmes Posted November 30, 2012 Posted November 30, 2012 An interesting story in the sun newspaper, http://www.thesun.co.uk/sol/homepage/news/politics/4673505/UK-migration-down-by-25-per-cent.html
KhunOr Posted November 30, 2012 Posted November 30, 2012 Should read 'UK net Migration down...' Increasing numbers of people are leaving the UK. Surprised?
samran Posted November 30, 2012 Posted November 30, 2012 (edited) Should read 'UK net Migration down...' Increasing numbers of people are leaving the UK. Surprised? Really depends on what proportion of those are long term vs short term residents. Perfectly reasonable to assume that the vast bulk of those departing are people who would have departed anyway - students, those on short term assignments for a few years in the UK, working holiday visa holders from Commonwealth nations other EU nationals going home etc etc. Or we could just assume that they are all English leaving their shores scared of the hordes of foreigners comming to take over the place. I'll let others decide between the logical answer and the emotive answer... Edited November 30, 2012 by samran
7by7 Posted November 30, 2012 Posted November 30, 2012 (edited) The overall fall was 16%. All catergories were below this figure except students with a fall of 30%. (Source) A worrying trend for many universities who depend on the fees from foreign students. Many foreign students are now choosing to go elswhere, Australia and the USA for example, and take their money with them! Yes, stop bogus students; but we should be encouraging genuine students to come here, not putting them off. BTW, Samran, EU nationals are not included in these figures. Funny though, if you read the Australian press, you'll see the industry whinging that students are all headed to the UK cause of the high Australian dollar. Perhaps it is just a cyclical thing happening instead - across the board.
7by7 Posted November 30, 2012 Posted November 30, 2012 Possibly, UK universities have been worried about falling foreign student numbers ever since Messrs Blair and Brown massively increased student visa fees. Do you have any comparable figures for Australia regharding foreign students?

Searches through Australian migration figures will have to wait another day... But here is a press article which basically says what I just said. I'm just more of a cynic you see... http://www.theaustralian.com.au/higher-education/china-crisis-as-numbers-tumble/story-e6frgcjx-1226265112359

Having said that: no one would want to see "hordes of foreigners comming to take over the place." and their Country, which the Thais would not like to see either!...... and let's face it,who would? And one other thing,Europeans are flooding into England, vastly more than the English are going to Europe to live.

Do you have any comparable figures for Australia regharding foreign students? A more detailed info at the URL below. The Australian government did have a significant tightening of visa requirements for overseas students due to abuse of the "system". This has now been relaxed due to the financial damage to the education sector. One of the largest market falls was students from India after some racist motivated attacks in Australia that were massively hyped by the Indian media. http://www.abs.gov.a...Dec 2011#TRENDS Edited December 1, 2012 by simple1
7by7 Posted December 1, 2012 Posted December 1, 2012 Thanks for that. So, both countries are experiencing a fall in foreign students, with the resulting loss to both economies. Still wondering where they are now going.

I fail to agree, I believe a very large number of English people DREAM of Leaving but either do not have the resources or dare I say confidence to do it.
krisb Posted December 1, 2012 Posted December 1, 2012 Australian students seem to be getting lured off shore because of the obvious, money. Chinese and Indian students are turning up here because of the obvious, money. I know in the building industry theres so many "students" working in trades now. Forget their degrees, noone wants to hire professionals that arent fluent in English, but theres loads of jobs for tilers, painters, plasterers etc that they flock to. Not to mention the Indian taxi drivers these days. Money makes the world go round. Sorry off topic, I was just thinkn out loud.
simple1 Posted December 1, 2012 Posted December 1, 2012 Thanks for that. So, both countries are experiencing a fall in foreign students, with the resulting loss to both economies. Still wondering where they are now going. 2009 World Conference on Higher Education report, there were more than 2.5 million students studying outside their own country. USA is the front-runner with approximately 723,277 foreign enrollment in 2010-11. Japan, Canada and New Zealand are perceived as evolving destinations for international students. Canada has seen a large increase in the number of India students, where the number of Indian students rose 280% in 2010 compared to 2008. What about the rest of the UK? It's difficult to find current figures, but here are some interesting links, which I hope may be of some help? Teresa May (UK Home Secretary) latest press release, with figures on the last line. http://www.guardian.co.uk/uk/2012/oct/07/theresa-may-curbs-eu-migration UK Expats abroad estimate. http://www.votes-for-expat-brits.com/British-expats.php Daily Mail Article. 7by7 Posted December 1, 2012 Posted December 1, 2012 The newspaper articles mention they number of immigrants from other European countries during the period reported upon (The Guardian article was published October 2012, The mail one November 2011) but do not say how many live in the UK in total. Appendix C of the report published in 2010, linked to from the British expat site, does give an approximate breakdown world wide by country of Brits living abroad. Going through this I have calculated that there are about 1.9 million Brits living in European countries (I haven't counted those who only live there for part of the year). The 2011 census ethnicity results show White (other) as 3,096,169 and White Irish as 691,232. Of the White (other), approximately 80% identified themselves as coming from Europe so that figure plus the Irish makes about 3 million. Many people who identified themselves as European in the census have actually lived in the UK since the end of the war, Poles and Italians being the largest two of this group, or are the children and grandchildren of these people. Indeed, not counting the Irish, 33% said they were born in a Western European country and 14% in an Eastern European country. So just over half the people identifying themselves as European were actually born in the UK and are almost certainly British citizens. So, including the Irish, that leaves approximately 1.5 million immigrants from Europe living in the UK; slightly less than the number of Brits living in Europe! Hardly justification for the assertion that "Europeans are flooding into England, vastly more than the English are going to Europe to live." is it?!
