Thailand's Prime Minister Yingluck Crushes Opponents On The Streets And In Parliament

Thailand's Prime Minister Yingluck crushes opponents on the streets and in parliament

BANGKOK: -- Thailand’s deposed and exiled former prime minister Thaksin Shinawatra may have outsmarted himself when he eased his younger sister, Yingluck, into power as his surrogate.

After a year playing avatar for her brother, who has been semi-nomadic in Asia and the Middle East since his ouster in a 2006 military coup, Yingluck is emerging as a confident and deft leader in her own right.

She is increasingly unwilling to blindly follow the orders issued from Thaksin’s hotel room of the moment.

In October Yingluck defied Thaksin’s directives over a cabinet shuffle, rejected a political ally he wanted made a minister and kept on two economics ministers her brother had publicly criticized.

A poll taken at the time found nearly 53 per cent of respondents would vote for the governing Puea Thai Party (PTP) led by Yingluck, up from the 48 per cent support they won in last year’s election.

About 63 per cent of those polled believe Yingluck has become more self-confident and independent in office, an approval rating assisted by a vibrant economic performance.

Excellent article, if one enjoys light humour, from another planet ... rolleyes.gif

When did this happen?

Don't kid yourself, blood runs thicker than water in Asian politics. Thaksin could turn Yingluck's light with a click of his fingers. She will increasingly find herself in the spotlight of a nasty evolving situation, one that she alone will be answerable to.

I have to say she looked very confident and at ease standing next to Obama a couple of weeks ago.

The red PR machine at work again

When did this happen?

While you and her detractors were occupied throwing mud. The electorate became more comfortable with the duly elected PM.

It is why the Democrats pulled out all stops to get the censure debate. They are desperate to stop her slow and steady gains. The Democrats under Abhisit never enjoyed the level of support that the PTP have.

GK, I really believe that you are a smart person. But I just can't understand how you can believe in what you write. She gains nothing, she gets comfortable just because she now becomes a professional cheat and liar, same as her brother and all the muppets who sit with her.

What are the achievements of this government? How can any reasonable electorate of this "duly elected PM" (Tongue in cheek here) be more comfortable, knowing that this PM and associates (same as in a company) have delivered NOTHING???

Take you red glasses off, and look around you. Truth might hurt at first, but you gonna get used to it.

It was the object of an other thread a few days ago. An other great achievement of PT is to nurture new talents who will be tomorrow's leaders.

Look at the democrats. Abhisit obviously doesn't have what it takes to be the nation leader, but worse that that, he blocks the ascension of young talents who would have this ability.

I think you are a bit confused now

If you're going to be crushed, it might as well be under designer Burberrys.

Please, lets give them another 5-10 years in power....then we can really see how good this government is. Without a coup, they are in this for the long haul, so only time will tell if they can actually do something that benefits the country. PT wouldn't be so far ahead if the Dems actually did something for the masses when they were in power.

Talking about the voice, what is your opinion ? I really think the young guy with the white make up is going to win.

I'm always amused by the farang political experts who call Yingluck a puppet. You fail to realize that she is a women. You can't tell any woman what to do. When decisions in our household have to be made, my wife is polite enough to ask my opinion but when it comes down to it, she does what she wanted to do before consulting with me.

If Yingluck were Thaksin's brother, Thaksin may be able to pull the strings but Yingluck is very obviously NOT his brother.

Yes, you think!

I have not actually heard one of them in tune on The Voice here in Thailand.

but back on topic

Yingluk could cure cancer, aids, bring world peace and and end to poverty and hunger, and people on here would still try and belittle this woman (that has achieved more than any of them in her life, maybe that's the problem) based on who her brother is, its sad really.

luckily the people that matter, the voters, have a say in this rather some of the posters on here.

Let's deal with the subject at hand: The slow, but steady growth the government's popular support. The issue is not what has been delivered or will be delivered. What matters in this discussion is the solid support base the government enjoys. If there was a viable alternative, I would embrace it, but there isn't. This is Thailand, and the political group called Slim Pickings dominates.

What's the alternative? Another military dictatorship? It isn't the Democrats, led by a weak "leader" and with its own sordid history of abuses and corruption scandals, and it isn't one of the small special interest political parties. I keep hoping that someone, somewhere will come out of the woodwork, a person with impeccable credentials, without the taint of corruption and with an understanding of the changes that need to be done. I don't think Thailand can improve until there is somesort of change in society that would see severe penalties imposed for corruption and the elimination of all the debauched deviant excesses that make Thailand so desirable for so many people. Call me a puritan, or a commie, but I don't think Thailand will evolve into a nation where the rule of law means something, where the poor are not exploited, where the police, military, judiciary and government will lead by example and can be trusted, without a major social upheaval, along the lines of what one saw in Europe in the 17th and 18th centuries. Until then, we are stuck with people like PM Yingluck. One plays the game with the cards that are dealt.

Where do you see the steady grow of support?? The polls can't be taken seriously and the last few by elections didn't look so good. I agree on the Democrats, I can't understand why they don't find anyone more suitable.....Thailand had this clean person already....Chamlong.....but it wasn't successful. I would need a dictator with absolute power and only the best interests for Thailand. If you look at history to find good dictators you'll see that these are very rare.....

My opinion is yo oust every government that is corrupt.....by mass demonstrations or by military coups or by the courts I don't care. I hope that at one time politicians learn to keep clean to avoid to be ousted. But recent history shows that they learned to fill their pockets faster as they know they may have only limited time....

I agree with your last sentence and based on that this government appears to be living every day as if it were their last.

its @ing unbelievable the knee-jerk reactions you get.

being an elected government is not the problem

corruption is a problem. and it isnt fixed by coups or doting old generals

this government is popular. you hit the nail on the head. if there were an election tomorrow the pt would win again

Yingluck Shinawatra remains more popular than opposition leader Abhisit Vejjajiva but her lead has shrunk by nearly five percentage points following the no-confidence debate in Parliament.

The demonstration further indicated that Ms. Yingluck's government operates with the single purpose of furthering Mr. Thaksin's long-term political aims. It's an allegation both Shinawatras deny, but one that continues to complicate Ms. Yingluck's task of bringing lasting reconciliation to this politically divided country.

I agree, she has learned to stand pretty well by now.

Now, if she gets an equally good grip on thinking, understanding and talking... Watch out folks!
