Uk Or Thai Resident?

Featured Replies

British National, born and raised in the UK. I moved out here Sept 2012 to teach English. I'm heading back to the UK for a couple of weeks and want to get my flights insured. I have not been back to the UK since coming out here last year and many insurance companies ask for country of permanent residence. Would that be Thailand or UK? (I'm here with a NIB visa so I'm aware that Thailand doesn't count me as a resident of Thailand). What option do I choose?

Thanks

Are you still registered in the UK? Did you register yourself in Thailand, with your embassy e.g. or in a housebook?

How do you mean registered in the UK? I registered with LOCATE through the Foreign and Commonwealth Office to let them know I was in Thailand. I am still registered with a Dr back home. I haven't been back during the last tax year and have been exempt from paying taxes. I spoke to someone through a Insurance company and they said I couldn't get insured by them because I hadn't been in the Uk for 6 out of the last 12 months.

If you haven't been back in the UK in the past six months you are not considered resident for NHS purposes, unless you are over 65 or you are an expat who is returning on a permanent basis (these rules have changed very recently).

Also, if you've spent the past tax year outside the UK you MAY be considered non-resident although there is now much more to that picture than simply the past twelve months.

I think the answer you are looking for regrding your insurance is that you are resident in Thailand, it doesn't matter that Thailand doesn't agree with that answer, that is where you have lived and worked for the past year hence it can be refered to as your stable base.
