Hi, I'm an American citizen in Namibia. I'm flying to Bangkok on December 19 with Kenya Airways. I fly from Namibia to Johannesburg, then a five-hour layover in Nairobi Airport, then to Bangkok.

Will I need to be immunized before my trip in order to be allowed into Bangkok? Namibia has no required vaccinations and I will not leave Nairobi Airport.

Also, I have a one-way ticket to Bangkok, as I'm leaving a week after for Penang, Malaysia via train. Will this be a problem?

Finally, can anyone direct me to the website of the Thai authority that can give me definitive answers to these questions?

Thanks in advance.

Yellow Fever appears to be required for arrival in Thailand after transit in Kenya and I would also check airline to be sure they will even allow you to fly without r/t or onward air ticket if you do not have a visa. You can fill in your information on this web site to get full airline visa and health requirements.

Below is the Official Thai Government requirement for Yellow Fever shots.

Kenya (Nairobi) is on the yellow fever list, according to IATA database you als need vaccination if you only transit a yellow fever country.

Thailand (TH)

Vaccination against yellow fever required if arriving within

10 days after leaving or transiting countries with risk of

yellow fever transmission For details, click here.

Exempt from Yellow Fever vaccination:

- Children under 1 year of age.

I worked in Africa for 10 years including 2 years in Namibia.

If you fly in from the African continent you have to stop at the counter for Health. You have to show your yellow fever booklet. Strangely enough if you fly via dubai there is no need to go to the desk. They don't seem to be bothered about where your journey originated but more in where your last leg began....

I got my YF jabs done in Patts...No hospital had them in stock but I was advised to go to Laem Chabang port immigration and true to form they had some in their fridge.

Hey all, thanks so much for the advice.

That Thai Ministry of Foreign Affairs link says I definitely need it.

On the other hand, that Star Alliance link says I'm exempt as long as I don't leave the transiting area.

I guess I should err on the side of caution and get the jabs.

Far as the round-trip issue, do you think they'll accept a copy of my Bangkok-Malaysia train itinerary?

Thanks again.

When you land remember to go to the Health desk first. Don't try to go to immigration they will turn you back.

This is one time where it is really worth your while to sit up front and get out first ..and run Forest RUN!!..Cos there is only one person on that desk and he has to check and stamp everybody on the plane......

....and next time fly Emirates..

Last year I flew from Uganda and the airline was checking you had Yellow Fever jab before bosrding to Thailand

So I would have the jab before you leave

I went to Kenya for 11 straight years and never got asked about Yellow Fever Cert. I had the jab done again on year 11 but misplaced the cert now Doh!

Flew into NBO and MSA and sailed straight through.

My trick was to wear Bata Safari Boots. They always catch them so I get told "you are one of us, welcome back to Kenya Mr Paul"

The airline will not accept a train ticket. They want to see a flight ticket.

You could buy a cheap ticket to Penang and then take train back. Check airasia.com.
