PAD leaders fail to show up, warrants sought

BANGKOK: -- Public prosecutors yesterday threatened to seek arrest warrants for yellow-shirt leaders after they failed to turn up to acknowledge charges related to the anti-Thaksin Shinawatra protests in 2008.

Sondhi Limthongkul, a co-leader of the People's Alliance for Democracy, and 20 other leading members of the group did not show up at the Office of the Attorney-General so public prosecutors could officially file three cases against them with the Criminal Court. The public prosecutors seek to sue:

l Sondhi for defaming Thaksin during a PAD rally in 2008;

l Sondhi and 20 key PAD members for besieging the Parliament building on October 5-7, 2008;

l PAD co-leader Chamlong Srimuang and five other leaders for leading protesters to storm into and seize Government House from August 26-31, 2008.

PAD lawyer Nitithorn Lamlua told the public prosecutors that the PAD leaders wanted to postpone the arrangement because some were busy with other activities and did not want to confront red-shirt leaders who were appearing at court for other cases.

Prayuth Sattayarak, a special prosecutor for criminal cases, said he had told police to summon the PAD suspects to face charges, adding that they should obtain arrest warrants for them.

Meanwhile, public prosecutors have postponed making a decision on two other cases against PAD leaders to February 7, PAD lawyer Puangthip Boonsanong said.

In one of the cases, 114 people, including PAD leaders, were charged with seizing Don Mueang and Suvarnabhumi airports. In another case, Sondhi and eight other PAD leading members were charged with committing sedition against the government.

Is a very poor excuse for not going to court when summoned..

Its right up there with the dog ate my homework.

"Note-from-mum" excuses seem to be par for the course in Thailand. Nattawut can't attend a court case that could see him executed because Yingluk needs him on an official visit, and Korkaew released because a party with a large majority needs him in parliament.

It would be so simple to grab them all, and send them where they should be....

It does not matter the color, throw them in jail, and let them rot!

It must have been inconvenient for the PAD leaders to show-up. Prosecutors really need to do a better job of coordinating an appointment with the PAD leaders; otherwise, it could cause further inconvenience for the PAD leaders. TiT

Anyone (Red or Yellow) who fails to attend court following a summons is in contempt of court. They should be arrested and held in custody until the case is heard in court which could take many more months.

Agree 100%

Unfortunately there is a man in Dubai who seems to have set a trend.

Sondhi Limthongkul has already been charged, tried, convicted and sentenced to jail on a number of counts but has yet to do a day "inside" why should he bother about another conviction while he and the other puppets of the Amart (including TV's favourite son, Mark) know that they will never do any time while under the shield of the "elite"

Difference is, AV has only been charged, without any evidence, and has not been tried or convicted of anything.

That would presumably be the elite that Thaksin wishes to replace with his elite.

So someone who expresses a view not in line with your own "yellow tinted" ideal is a loony?

What a circus!! Why would anyone take Thai warrants seriously? The newspaper has published stories on numerous occasions about Thai police "threatening" to issue warrants. The newspaper never challenges these incidents for follow up action. Never. And of course, there is never, ever follow up. Preposterous circus this Thailand.

I thought warrants were issued by courts and enforced by the police. Or does it work differently in Thailand?
