Embattled Pheu Thai MP gets temporary freedom to join House session

BANGKOK, Dec 21 – Pheu Thai MP Korkaew Pikulthong was released from Bangkok's Laksi Temporary Prison this morning under his parliamentary immunity to attend House meeting until the present session ends.

He was sent to jail on Nov 30 after the Criminal Court revoked his bail on terrorism charge.

He was greeted by Red Shirt activist Thida Thavornseth, leader of the pro-government United Front for Democracy against Dictatorship (UDD), his family and some supporters.

Talking to reporters after his release, Mr Korkaew stood firm that he will continue to join the lineup on the Red Shirt’s political stage but will be more careful in his words to avoid future problems.

He called on Red Shirt supporters to refrain from anger and to cooperate in lifting Thailand from the six-year pitch so that it moves on.

“The opposition should overlook [fugitive ex-prime minister] Thaksin shinawatra and Red Shirters should also overlook [opposition Democrat leader] Abhisit Vejjajiva,” he said, adding that he would fight on steadfastly as a UDD core leader.

He will return to jail when the present parliamentary session ends.

The Criminal Court announced on Thursday that the detention of the Pheu Thai MP remained unchanged but he would be temporarily released to attend the parliamentary session as requested by Parliament. (MCOT online news)

An interesting contrast today, with this UDD/Red Shirt leader, honored and respected by a huge swath of the Thai electorate, being harassed judicially, while we have the following headline currently running also, quoting in part - PAD Leaders fail to show up............

Speaks volumes, and is what the 'double standards' thing is all about. These two news reports running simultaneously on the same day is uncanny! (51)

I wonder of Korkeaw will be a speaker at the humongous rally of the UDD/Red Shirts at Bonanza, near Khao Yai tomorrow.

He will be extremely well received if he does. One thing the application of these 'double standards' do, is create a victimization aura around them. In fact, a book authored by Jatuporn, features a photo of him on the front cover in prison shackles. It is a rite-of-passage for some.

So, if the court tries Abhisit and Suthep it will be doing its job, but if it tries Korkeaw and the other UDD leaders it is engaging in Judicial harassment?

Many folks are waiting to see Abhisit and sidekick Suthep in prison shackles also. That would go a huge way to get at the stigma of "double standards". It may serve to bring the balance you reference.

Korkeaw has already been found guilty ad sentenced, Abhisit and Suthep have not yet gone to trial.

Also when Thaksin was found guilty did you see him in shackles or would that also be a "double standard"?

In prison shackles for WHAT?

Murder? Attempted murder?

No way.

Maybe if they had a charge that would actually stand up in court rather than a propaganda charge.

Just another normal day in the LOS. Yet another criminal in the Yingluck/Thaksin adminstration. Nothing new here.

it is going to be a bitter lesson for "a huge swath of the Thai electorate" that what the red shirts did in BKK was both morally wrong and illegal, and even under Thaksin's puppet government the legal system will slowly but surely process them, find them guilty and bang them up for many years.

Many still believe the red shirts did nothing wrong, that their cause was just, and that makes killing maiming and arson forgivable. That view is based on misinformation and false premise fed to them by Thaksin's mercenary agitators to further his own cause. A big dose of reality approaches, some may choke on it.

Indeed, someone has to teach all sides that you can't just act with impunity during a protest. I would seriously make it a crime to continue a protest once it "severely" impedes the general public in their daily life. Shut down the centre of a city for long enough (a week or so) and at that point everyone present is in breach of the law. They could have gone to lumpini and sat their to their hearts content, but the story they plead is made all the bigger because they cause massive inconvenience to hundreds of thousands every day.

As for whatever else the leaders got up to, they went way way beyond any reasonable type of conduct in asking to burn down Bangkok. However, to turn this into terrorism shows how clueless the legal system is in thailand. A couple of years for incitement to arson would be enough to have shut them up.

Terrorism is the unlawful use of force or violence against persons or property to intimidate or coerce a government, the civilian population, or any segment thereof, in furtherance of political or social objectives.

Red Shirt acts and threats or terrorism are well documented, I don't know why it would be clueless to add those charges to those involved.

I wouldn't know were to precisely place Korkaew's threats of unleashing a civil war unless the court ruled on their (UDD and PTP) favour, the thing that landed him in jail; though it wouldn't take much convincing that it also constitutes the use of terror for political pressure.

In Canada they have the Canadian mental health society. Not sure what a person can find in Thailand.wai2.gif

Will they have road barricades to keep people from attending it and 20,000 armed policemen to control the attendees. Or will it be the normal PT double standards for the less than gifted.

To be fair Bonanza is a private estate.

There is some doubt whether it should be as it is in s national park.

Seems as if this character Korkeaw like Jutuporn is becoming increasingly concerned about the payment methods of Thaksin and the P.T.P.

The two aforementioned characters careers as cannon fodder may well have been lucrative in the short term, however long term benifits do look somewhat dubious.

What price loyalty now.Korkeaw and Jutuporn ?

Do remember though that grass roots need (fertilizer well that's the polite expression ) to flourish and grow strong.

Cattle or shall I say ''Bulls'' graze and recycle the food thus providing nutrients for the fodder they need.

All much like the way that Thaksin and the Red Shirt leaders and aunt Thida.provide fodder for their followers whistling.gifwhistling.gif
