Police on security alert during New Year celebrations

By Digital Media

BANGKOK, Dec 24 - Bangkok Metropolitan Police have stepped up security during Christmas and New Year celebrations to ensure public safety, a senior police officer said on Monday.

Deputy commander of metropolitan police Pol Lt-Gen Adul Narongsak said police have been instructed to tighten security between December 25 and January 2. The measures include setting up checkpoints, taking legal action against those who illegally possess firearms or violate the Alcohol Control Act, as well as entertainment complexes which operate after the permitted time.

Gen Adul said security will be provided to prevent untoward incident at public celebration venues.

He said more than 3,000 police will be deployed at the New Year’s Countdown Party at CentralWorld shopping mall in Bangkok's prime commercial area.

The officer said police will apply maximum security measures at CentralWorld shopping complex including designating entrance and exits of the venues, erecting barricades, installing closed circuit televisions in some 100 spots, and using scanners to detect explosive devices.

Gen Adul urged the public to avoid releasing sky lanterns during the period as they could disrupt aviation, as well as causing fire to others' properties. (MCOT online news)
